How to Use

Dosage

For the first 3 weeks, take one 15 mg tablet twice a day. After that, take one 20 mg tablet once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose if you have kidney problems.

Method

Take with food, preferably with water. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce, then eat it right away. It can also be given via a feeding tube.

Important

Do not take more than two 15 mg tablets (30 mg total) in one day during the first 3 weeks. Do not take more than one 20 mg tablet in one day after the first 3 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling weak, tired, pale skin, or shortness of breath (due to fewer red blood cells)
  • Bleeding from the stomach or intestines, urinary or genital areas (including blood in urine or heavy periods), nose, or gums
  • Bleeding in the eye (including the white part)
  • Bleeding into tissue or forming bruises (hematoma)
  • Coughing up blood
  • Bleeding on or under the skin
  • Bleeding after surgery
  • Blood or fluid leaking from a surgical wound
  • Swelling or pain in the limbs (arms or legs)
  • Kidney problems (shown in blood tests)
  • Fever
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Low blood pressure (causing dizziness or fainting when standing up)
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Rash or itchy skin
  • Increased liver enzymes (shown in blood tests)
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Allergic reactions, including skin reactions
  • Liver problems (shown in blood tests)
  • Increased bilirubin, pancreas/liver enzymes, or platelet count (shown in blood tests)
  • Fainting or feeling unwell
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dry mouth
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Blocked bile flow (cholestasis), liver inflammation (hepatitis), or liver damage, leading to yellow skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • Localized swelling
  • Blood collection in the groin (hematoma), especially after a heart procedure
  • Lung inflammation caused by a certain type of white blood cell (eosinophilic pneumonia)
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding
  • Kidney bleeding, sometimes with blood in urine, leading to poor kidney function
  • Increased pressure in arm or leg muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use reliable birth control if you can become pregnant.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have heavy bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding, like a stomach ulcer or recent brain/eye surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that prevent blood clotting, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, very high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, a heart valve replacement, or antiphospholipid syndrome.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or fainting. Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy or faint.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first.
