How to Use

Dosage

For preventing blood clots, adults usually take one 20 mg tablet once a day. If you have kidney problems, it might be one 15 mg tablet once a day. For treating blood clots, adults take one 15 mg tablet twice a day for the first 3 weeks, then one 20 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Take this medicine with food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If you cannot swallow the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with a small amount of water or applesauce. Eat this mixture right away.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribed. The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 30 mg (two 15 mg tablets) or 20 mg (one 20 mg tablet), depending on your treatment plan.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath due to fewer red blood cells.
  • Bleeding from your stomach or gut, urinary tract, genitals (including blood in urine or heavy periods), nosebleeds, bleeding gums, eye bleeding, or bruising under the skin.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding after surgery or fluid leaking from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling or pain in your arms or legs.
  • Changes in how your kidneys work (seen in blood tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach ache, indigestion, feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting), constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (may make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up).
  • Headache, dizziness, or general weakness/tiredness.
  • Skin rash or itching.
  • Higher levels of certain liver enzymes in blood tests.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head, bleeding into a joint causing pain and swelling, muscle bleeding.
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including skin reactions or hives.
  • Liver problems (seen in blood tests), increased bilirubin levels, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), reduced bile flow, liver inflammation or damage.
  • Fainting, feeling generally unwell, fast heartbeat, dry mouth.
  • Localized swelling or blood collection in the groin (a bruise after a heart procedure).
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding, or bleeding in the kidney that causes blood in your urine and kidney problems.
  • Increased pressure in leg or arm muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, numbness, or even paralysis (compartment syndrome).
  • Inflammation in the lungs caused by a type of white blood cell (eosinophilic lung inflammation).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe bleeding.
  • Do not use if you have a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer, a brain injury, or recent brain or eye surgery.
  • Do not use if you are taking other blood-thinning medicines, unless your doctor has specifically told you to switch treatments or use them together.
  • Do not use if you have a liver disease that makes you bleed more easily.
