How to Use

Dosage

For stroke prevention, one 20 mg tablet once daily, or 15 mg if you have reduced kidney function. For treating blood clots, 15 mg twice daily for 3 weeks, then 20 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet with food and swallow it with water. If you cannot swallow it whole, crush it and mix it with water or applesauce, then eat immediately after.

Important

Maximum 30 mg per day (typically as two 15 mg doses during the first three weeks).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decrease in red blood cells, which can cause pale skin, weakness, or shortness of breath.
  • Bleeding in the stomach, intestines, urinary tract, genital area (including blood in urine and heavy menstrual bleeding), nose, or gums.
  • Bleeding in the eye (including the white part of the eye).
  • Bleeding into tissue or body cavities (e.g., bruising).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding on or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery.
  • Oozing of blood or fluid from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling in your arms or legs.
  • Pain in your arms or legs.
  • Reduced kidney function (seen in tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach ache, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up).
  • Weakness, tiredness, headache, dizziness.
  • Skin rash, itchy skin.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (in blood tests).
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head.
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling.
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions.
  • Reduced liver function (seen in tests).
  • Increased levels of bilirubin, pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count (in blood tests).
  • Fainting.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Bile duct blockage, liver inflammation or liver damage.
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • Bruise in the groin, related to a heart procedure.
  • Eosinophilic lung inflammation (build-up of certain white blood cells in the lungs).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are actively bleeding a lot.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the brain.
  • Do not take if you are using other blood-thinning medicines (e.g., warfarin, dabigatran, apixaban, heparin), unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Inform your doctor about all surgeries, especially if you get an injection or catheter in your spine. Follow your doctor's instructions for taking the medicine before and after the procedure.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a severe skin reaction, such as a spreading rash, blisters, or sores in your mouth or eyes.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing.
