How to Use

Dosage

For preventing clots after surgery, take one 10 mg tablet once daily. For treating existing clots, your doctor will decide if you take one 10 mg or one 20 mg tablet once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

Do not take more than the dose your doctor has prescribed, which is typically one 10 mg or 20 mg tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath due to fewer red blood cells (anemia).
  • Bleeding from the stomach or gut, urinary tract (blood in urine, heavy periods), nose, gums, eyes (including whites of eyes), or under the skin (bruising).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding or fluid oozing from a surgical wound after an operation.
  • Swelling or pain in your arms or legs.
  • Fever.
  • Stomach ache, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up.
  • General weakness, tiredness, headache, or dizziness.
  • Rash, itchy skin, or hives.
  • Changes in blood tests showing kidney or liver problems, increased liver enzymes or bilirubin, or low platelet count.
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • General feeling of being unwell (malaise).
RARE
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Problems with bile flow (cholestasis), liver inflammation (hepatitis) including liver damage, or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling that is not due to injury.
  • A collection of blood (hematoma) in the groin after a heart procedure where a catheter was inserted into a leg artery (pseudoaneurysm).
  • Lung inflammation caused by an accumulation of a type of white blood cells (eosinophilic lung inflammation).
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding.
  • Bleeding in the kidney, sometimes with blood in the urine, leading to kidney dysfunction (anticoagulant-related nephropathy).
  • Increased pressure in leg or arm muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, altered sensation, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have active bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer, bleeding in the brain, recent surgery, severe kidney or liver problems, very high blood pressure, an artificial heart valve, or if you are taking other blood thinners.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of severe bleeding, such as a severe headache, one-sided weakness, vomiting, seizures, or dark, tarry stools, or unusual weakness, tiredness, paleness, dizziness, unexplained swelling, shortness of breath, or chest pain.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a severe skin reaction, such as a widespread rash, blisters, or sores in your mouth or eyes.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hives, or a sudden drop in blood pressure.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or fainting. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these symptoms.
