How to Use

Dosage

Take one 2.5 mg tablet twice a day.

Method

Take your tablet at the same time each day, for example, one in the morning and one in the evening. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce right before taking it.

Important

Do not take more than two 2.5 mg tablets (5 mg total) in one day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling weak or tired, pale skin, or shortness of breath (due to fewer red blood cells)
  • Bleeding from your stomach, intestines, urinary or genital area (including blood in urine and heavy periods), nosebleeds, or bleeding gums
  • Bleeding in the eye
  • Bleeding into tissues or body cavities (bruising)
  • Coughing up blood
  • Bleeding on or under the skin
  • Bleeding after an operation or oozing from a surgical wound
  • Swelling or pain in your arms or legs
  • Poor kidney function (may be seen in blood tests)
  • Fever
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting), constipation, or diarrhea
  • Low blood pressure (which can make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up)
  • General weakness, tiredness, headache, or dizziness
  • Rash or itchy skin
  • Blood tests may show increased liver enzymes
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head (can cause headache, weakness on one side, vomiting, seizures, or confusion)
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions
  • Poor liver function (may be seen in blood tests)
  • Blood tests may show increased bilirubin, certain pancreas or liver enzymes, or changes in platelet count
  • Fainting or feeling unwell
  • Faster heartbeat
  • Dry mouth or hives (itchy rash)
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Blocked bile flow (cholestasis), liver inflammation (hepatitis) including liver damage, or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Local swelling
  • Collection of blood (hematoma) in the groin after a heart procedure
  • A type of lung inflammation caused by too many white blood cells (eosinophilic pneumonia)
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding
  • Bleeding in the kidney, sometimes with blood in the urine, leading to poor kidney function
  • Increased pressure in leg and arm muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, altered sensation, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are currently bleeding heavily.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer, a brain injury, or recent brain or eye surgery.
  • Do not take if you are already using other medicines to thin your blood (like warfarin, dabigatran, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use reliable birth control if you can get pregnant while taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as stopping can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
