How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 15 mg twice daily for 3 weeks to treat blood clots, then 20 mg once daily. For preventing blood clots, it's usually 20 mg once daily. Doses for children and adolescents depend on their weight, typically 15 mg or 20 mg once daily.

Method

Take this medicine with food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce just before taking it, then eat food right away. Take your medicine at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 30 mg (two 15 mg tablets taken together) when starting blood clot treatment. For prevention or ongoing treatment, the maximum is usually 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath due to fewer red blood cells.
  • Bleeding in the stomach or gut, urinary or genital bleeding (including blood in urine or heavy periods), nosebleeds, or gum bleeding.
  • Bleeding in the eye (including the white part of the eye).
  • Bleeding into tissues or body cavities (bruising, hematoma).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding from or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery.
  • Oozing of blood or fluid from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling of the limbs.
  • Pain in the limbs.
  • Reduced kidney function (may be seen in blood tests).
  • Fever.
  • Abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea or vomiting, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up).
  • General weakness or tiredness, headache, dizziness.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Blood tests may show increased levels of certain liver enzymes.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head.
  • Bleeding into a joint causing pain and swelling.
  • Low number of platelets (blood cells that help blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions.
  • Liver problems (may be seen in blood tests).
  • Blood tests may show increased bilirubin, pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count.
  • Fainting.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Faster heart rate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Bile flow problems (cholestasis), inflamed liver (hepatitis) including liver damage, or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • Blood collection (hematoma) in the groin, a complication after a heart procedure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury or bleeding, recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you are using other blood-thinning medicines (e.g., warfarin, dabigatran, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor is specifically switching your medication or keeping a catheter open.
  • Do not take if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
