How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. It is usually one 15 mg or 20 mg tablet once or twice a day, depending on your condition and weight.

Method

Take the tablet with food. Swallow it whole with water. If you can't swallow it, you can crush it and mix it with water or applesauce, then eat it right away.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes. Typically, the maximum is one 20 mg tablet or two 15 mg tablets (total 30 mg) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath due to fewer red blood cells.
  • Bleeding in the stomach, intestines, urinary or genital areas (including blood in urine or heavy periods), nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.
  • Bleeding in the eye (including in the white part).
  • Bleeding into tissues or body spaces (bruising).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding from or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery or fluid leaking from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling or pain in your arms or legs.
  • Kidney problems (your doctor might see this in tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting), constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up.
  • Feeling weak, tired, headache, or dizziness.
  • Rash or itchy skin.
  • Blood tests may show higher levels of certain liver enzymes.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside your head (symptoms like bad headache, weakness on one side, throwing up, seizures, or confusion). Seek urgent medical help.
  • Bleeding into a joint causing pain and swelling.
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help your blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including itchy rashes on the skin.
  • Liver problems (may show up in blood tests).
  • Blood tests showing higher levels of bilirubin (a yellow substance), pancreas or liver enzymes, or altered platelet count.
  • Fainting or feeling dizzy.
  • Feeling unwell or sick to your stomach.
  • Faster heart rate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives (itchy welts on the skin).
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), bile flow issues, or liver inflammation.
  • Swelling in one area of the body.
  • A blood clot in the groin area after a heart procedure (where a tube was put into a leg artery).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have heavy bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a condition that greatly increases your risk of severe bleeding, like a stomach ulcer, bleeding in the brain, or recent brain or eye surgery.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using other blood-thinning medicines (unless your doctor tells you to for specific reasons, like switching medicines or keeping a catheter open).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
