How to Use

Dosage

One 10 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing the whole tablet, you can crush it and mix it with water or applesauce right before taking it. Try to take the tablet at the same time each day. After hip or knee surgery, the first dose should be taken 6-10 hours after the operation.

Important

Usually no more than one 10 mg tablet per day, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fewer red blood cells, which can make your skin look pale and cause weakness or shortness of breath.
  • Bleeding in the stomach or gut, urinary or genital areas (like blood in urine and heavy periods), nosebleeds, gum bleeding, eye bleeding (including in the white part of the eye).
  • Bleeding into tissue or under the skin (a bruise).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding after surgery, blood or fluid leaking from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling in arms or legs, arm or leg pain.
  • Kidney problems (may be seen in your doctor's tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, feeling sick or throwing up, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (symptoms can be dizziness or fainting when standing up).
  • Feeling less strong and energetic (weakness, tiredness), headache, dizziness.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Blood tests may show that some liver enzymes have increased.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head (symptoms can include headache, weakness on one side of the body, vomiting, seizures, decreased awareness, and stiff neck).
  • Bleeding into a joint, which can cause pain and swelling.
  • Low platelet count (fewer blood cells that help the blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions.
  • Liver problems (may be seen in your doctor's tests). Blood tests may also show increased bilirubin, some pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count.
  • Fainting.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Reduced bile flow, liver inflammation (including liver damage), yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • A blood collection (bruise) in the groin, which is a complication from a heart catheter procedure.
  • Build-up of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the lungs, causing lung inflammation (eosinophilic pneumonia).
  • Kidney problems after serious bleeding, bleeding in the kidney, which can lead to the kidneys not working properly.
  • Increased pressure in leg and arm muscles after bleeding, which can cause pain, swelling, numbness, or paralysis.

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause serious bleeding, which can be life-threatening. Contact your doctor right away if you notice signs of serious bleeding, such as prolonged or heavy bleeding, severe headache, weakness, vomiting, chest pain, shortness of breath, paleness, or unexplained swelling.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to this medicine or its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have heavy bleeding or a condition that can easily cause serious bleeding (like a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the brain).
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use reliable birth control if you can get pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure that is not controlled, or if you are taking other blood thinners or certain other medicines (e.g., for fungal infections, some antibiotics, or antidepressants).

  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery or an injection in your spine.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or faint. Do not drive or use machines if you have these symptoms.
  • Not recommended for children and young people under 18 years old.
  • Be alert for signs of severe skin or allergic reactions (e.g., widespread rash, blisters, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing). Seek immediate medical help if you experience these symptoms.
