Rivaroxaban Krka is a blood-thinning medication used in adults to prevent and treat blood clots, for example, after surgery or in cases of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one 10 mg tablet once a day, unless your doctor prescribes otherwise. For maintenance treatment of blood clots, the dose may also be 20 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing the tablet whole, it can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water or apple sauce.

Important

The maximum daily dose is generally 20 mg, which corresponds to two 10 mg tablets.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Anemia (pale skin, feeling weak or short of breath)
  • Bleeding (from stomach, intestines, urinary/genital area, nose, gums, eyes, or under the skin causing bruises)
  • Coughing up blood
  • Bleeding or fluid oozing from a surgical wound
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • Kidney problems (shown in blood tests)
  • Fever
  • Stomach ache, indigestion, feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting), constipation, diarrhea
  • Low blood pressure (making you feel dizzy or faint when standing up)
  • Feeling weak, tired, headache, dizziness
  • Skin rash, itchy skin
  • Increased liver enzymes (shown in blood tests)
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head (symptoms like headache, weakness on one side, throwing up, seizures, confusion, or stiff neck). This is serious, seek urgent medical help!
  • Bleeding in a joint, causing pain and swelling
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Allergic reactions, including skin reactions
  • Liver problems (shown in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., increased bilirubin, pancreas/liver enzymes, or platelet count)
  • Fainting
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dry mouth
  • Hives
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Blocked bile flow, liver inflammation (including liver damage)
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Swelling in a specific area
  • Blood collection in the groin (bruise) after a heart procedure
  • Accumulation of certain white blood cells (eosinophils) causing lung inflammation
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding
  • Bleeding in the kidney, sometimes with blood in urine, leading to poor kidney function
  • Increased pressure in arm or leg muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, strange sensations, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have active, severe bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have an organ disease or condition that increases the risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, bleeding in the brain, or recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you are taking other blood-thinning medicines (like warfarin, dabigatran, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so for a medicine change or catheter flush.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have moderate to severe kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have very high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a stomach or bowel condition that might lead to bleeding (e.g., ulcers, inflammation, or tumors in the stomach, intestines, reproductive organs, or urinary tract).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a disease affecting the blood vessels in your eye (retinopathy).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a lung condition where airways are widened and filled with pus (bronchiectasis), or if you have had lung bleeding before.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an artificial heart valve.
  • Tell your doctor if you have antiphospholipid syndrome (an immune disorder that increases the risk of blood clots).
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or fainting. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
