How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4-6 mg daily. For elderly patients, 0.5 mg twice daily. Your doctor will determine the best dose for you.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor, typically ranging from 1 mg to 6 mg, depending on your condition and response.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, headache
  • Parkinsonism (slow movement, stiff muscles, tremors)
  • Increased prolactin levels (may cause breast swelling in men, missed periods or milk discharge in women)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Dizziness, blurred vision
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea
  • Rash, muscle or joint pain, back pain
  • Swelling in body parts (arms, legs), fever, fatigue
RARE
  • Stroke-like symptoms (sudden weakness/numbness on one side of face/body, slurred speech)
  • Involuntary rhythmic movements of face/tongue (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Blood clots in veins (swelling, pain, redness in leg)
  • Severe allergic reactions (fever, swelling of mouth/face/tongue, difficulty breathing, rash, drop in blood pressure)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (fever, stiff muscles, sweating, reduced consciousness)
  • Prolonged and painful erection (priapism)
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Diabetes or worsening diabetes, high blood sugar
  • Low white blood cell count (risk of infection)
  • Pancreatitis, bowel obstruction
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Heart rhythm problems (e.g., atrial fibrillation, slow heartbeat)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients listed in the leaflet.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or are taking blood pressure medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or heart and blood vessel problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had involuntary movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Inform your doctor if you have ever experienced fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or reduced consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).

  • Tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of low white blood cell counts.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or signs of high blood sugar.
  • Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy.
  • If you are a man and have ever had a prolonged or painful erection, tell your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have problems regulating your body temperature.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have abnormally high prolactin levels or a prolactin-dependent tumor.
  • Inform your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as this medicine may increase the risk.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery without consulting your doctor first.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have dementia caused by a stroke, as it increases the risk of stroke in elderly dementia patients.
  • This medicine may cause weight gain, which can be harmful to your health. Your doctor should monitor your weight regularly.
  • If you are scheduled for cataract surgery, inform your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
