How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 2 mg per day, which can be increased by your doctor. Most people take 4-6 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of water. You can take the daily dose once or split it into two doses, as advised by your doctor.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum dose, typically not more than 6 mg per day.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke or are at risk for one (e.g., high blood pressure). Get immediate medical help if you have a sudden change in mental state, or sudden weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs, especially on one side, or slurred speech. These can be signs of a stroke.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have involuntary, jerky movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts (called tardive dyskinesia), as treatment with risperidone may need to be stopped.
  • Get immediate medical help if you have a high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or confusion, as these can be signs of a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots. Get immediate medical help if you get swelling, pain, or redness in your leg, or chest pain and trouble breathing, as these can be signs of a blood clot.
  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged, painful erection, seek immediate medical help.
  • Get immediate medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or high blood sugar. Your doctor will check your blood sugar regularly.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain. Your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • In very rare cases, this medicine can cause dangerously low levels of white blood cells that fight infections. Your doctor may check your blood counts.
  • If you are having eye surgery for cataracts, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine. If taken in late pregnancy, newborns may experience symptoms like shaking, stiff muscles, drowsiness, or breathing problems.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you and have talked to your doctor.
  • This medicine contains lactose (a type of sugar). If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • The 2 mg and 4 mg tablets contain dyes (E110 or E102) which may cause allergic reactions.
  • Get immediate medical help if you develop a severe or life-threatening rash with blisters and peeling skin, starting around the mouth, nose, eyes, or genitals and spreading to other areas (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Get immediate medical help if you experience a severe bowel obstruction where the intestinal movements stop.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
