How to Use

Dosage

For schizophrenia: Adults typically start with 2 mg once daily, increasing to 4 mg on the second day; most patients feel best with 4-6 mg per day, taken as a single dose or divided. Elderly start with 0.5 mg twice daily, gradually increasing to 1-2 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 mg, as advised by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Movement problems like slow, stiff movements, tremors, or muscle spasms (Parkinsonism, Dystonia, Dyskinesia)
  • Feeling sleepy or less alert
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms (e.g., infections, cough, stuffy nose)
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., breast swelling in men, erection problems, decreased sex drive; in women, breast discomfort, milk discharge, missed periods, fertility issues)
  • Weight changes (gain, increased or decreased hunger)
  • Feeling irritated, sad, worried, or restless
  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems (e.g., blurry vision, conjunctivitis)
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, trouble breathing
  • Stomach problems (e.g., pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache)
  • Skin rash or redness
  • Muscle, bone, back, or joint pain
  • Trouble controlling urine
  • Swelling in body parts, fever, chest pain, feeling weak or tired, falls
RARE
  • Serious infections (e.g., bladder, eye, fungal, viral)
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., low white blood cells, low platelets, anemia)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., severe swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing)
  • Diabetes issues (e.g., worsening diabetes, high blood sugar, excessive water drinking, coma from uncontrolled diabetes)
  • Weight loss, low appetite, high cholesterol
  • Extreme mood changes (e.g., mania, anxiety, nightmares, trouble feeling emotions or orgasm)
  • Seizures or fainting
  • Stroke-like symptoms (e.g., sudden weakness, numbness, slurred speech, confusion)
  • Uncontrolled, jerky body movements (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Head tremors
  • Eye problems (e.g., glaucoma, sensitivity to light, dry eyes, issues during cataract surgery)
  • Ear problems (e.g., ringing in ears, ear pain)
  • Heart rhythm problems or low blood pressure when standing up
  • Lung problems (e.g., pneumonia from food, wheezing, voice changes, sleep apnea)
  • Bowel problems (e.g., infection, trouble controlling bowels, hard stool, difficulty swallowing, gas, inflamed pancreas, blocked bowels)
  • Skin and hair issues (e.g., hives, itching, hair loss, eczema, severe rash with blisters or peeling, like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Muscle breakdown with pain
  • Joint stiffness or swelling, neck pain
  • Urinary problems (e.g., frequent, painful, unable to urinate)
  • Sexual problems (e.g., erection or ejaculation issues, delayed periods, breast discharge)
  • Swelling of face, mouth or lips, chills, body temperature changes, cold limbs
  • Abnormal walking, thirst, general discomfort, feeling unwell
  • Liver enzyme increases
  • Pain after procedures, withdrawal symptoms
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems (irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure), risk of stroke, uncontrollable movements of your face or tongue, Parkinson's disease, dementia, low white blood cell counts, diabetes, epilepsy, prolonged painful erection, problems controlling body temperature, kidney or liver problems, high prolactin levels, or a history of blood clots.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • If you have eye surgery planned, tell your eye doctor you are taking this medicine.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have a higher stroke risk; do not take if your dementia is caused by a stroke.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice sudden mental changes, weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs (especially one side), or slurred speech, as these can be signs of a stroke.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems; do not drive or use machinery until you talk to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
