How to Use

Dosage

Typically, adults start with 2 mg once daily, increasing to 4 mg on the second day. Your doctor will adjust the dose, usually between 4-6 mg daily. For elderly patients, the starting dose is usually 0.5 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6 mg, but always follow your doctor's specific instructions, as it can vary by condition and age.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleep problems (difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, tiredness)
  • Movement issues (slow movements, stiff muscles, tremors, involuntary twitches, restlessness, dizziness)
  • Headache
  • Weight or appetite changes (gain, loss, increased or decreased appetite)
  • Mood changes (irritability, anxiety, depression)
  • Stomach or bowel problems (pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, toothache)
  • Various infections (e.g., cold, flu, sinus, ear, lung, urinary tract)
  • High prolactin levels (can cause breast changes or menstrual problems)
  • General issues (swelling, fever, chest pain, weakness, falls, skin rash, muscle or joint pain, high blood pressure, fast heartbeat)
RARE
  • Serious infections or changes in blood cell counts (e.g., very low white blood cells)
  • Allergic reactions (less severe than in warnings)
  • Diabetes or severe blood sugar problems
  • Increased cholesterol or triglyceride levels
  • Severe mental or neurological changes (e.g., mania, catatonia, seizures, coma, head tremor, balance issues, changes in speech, taste or sensation)
  • Eye problems (e.g., glaucoma, eye movement issues, light sensitivity, dry eyes, issues during cataract surgery)
  • Ear problems (ringing in ears, ear pain)
  • Heart or blood pressure issues (e.g., irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, dizziness when standing)
  • Respiratory problems (e.g., aspiration pneumonia, sleep apnea, wheezing, lung congestion)
  • Severe stomach or bowel issues (e.g., pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, difficulty swallowing, fecal incontinence)
  • Skin and hair issues (e.g., hives, eczema, hair loss, skin hardening)
  • Urinary or reproductive issues (e.g., inability to urinate, painful urination, sexual dysfunction, breast enlargement in men)
  • Other rare general issues (e.g., swelling of face, mouth, or lips, chills, cold limbs, jaundice, sleepwalking)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients listed in the leaflet.
  • If you have dementia caused by a stroke, you should not take risperidone.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you notice sudden mental changes, or sudden weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs (especially on one side), or slurred speech, as these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you experience involuntary rhythmic movements of your tongue, mouth, or face, as your treatment may need to stop.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice signs of blood clots, such as swelling, pain, or redness in your leg, or chest pain and difficulty breathing.

  • Get urgent medical care if you develop a high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion, as these can be signs of a rare, serious condition.
  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged, painful erection, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Call for immediate medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction with symptoms like fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, rash, or low blood pressure.
  • Seek emergency care if you develop a severe or life-threatening rash with blisters and skin peeling, especially if it starts around your mouth, nose, eyes, or genitals.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
