How to Use

Dosage

The dose usually starts at 2 mg once or twice a day for schizophrenia and mania, or 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily for elderly and aggression; your doctor will determine your exact dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose varies by condition, but for adults, it is generally up to 6 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms (slow movements, stiffness, tremors)
  • Drowsiness or tiredness
  • Headache
  • Infections (such as pneumonia, flu, ear infection)
  • Increased prolactin hormone levels in blood (may cause breast enlargement in men or menstrual problems in women)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Muscle spasms or contractions (e.g., in face, tongue, neck)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary, jerky muscle movements
  • Tremor
  • Blurred vision, eye inflammation
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, toothache
  • Rash, skin redness
  • Muscle cramps, muscle, bone, back or joint pain
  • Incontinence
  • Swelling (in arms, legs), fever, chest pain, weakness, fatigue, pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • Various infections (bladder, eye, throat, nails, skin, respiratory tract, viral, tick-borne)
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., low white blood cells, platelets, red blood cells, or high eosinophils)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Diabetes (or worsening of), high blood sugar, excessive thirst
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite
  • High cholesterol
  • Mania, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Reduced responsiveness, loss of consciousness or decreased level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Restlessness (legs), balance problems, speech difficulties, changes in taste or sensation, tingling or numbness
  • Light-sensitive eyes, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Vertigo, ringing in the ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm problems (e.g., fast or slow heartbeat, palpitations)
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or fainting), facial flushing
  • Lung and airway problems (such as coughing, shortness of breath, hoarseness)
  • Stomach or intestinal infection, fecal incontinence, hard stools, difficulty swallowing, gas
  • Skin problems (such as rash, itching, hair loss, dry skin, acne, dandruff)
  • Increased creatine kinase (muscle enzyme) in blood
  • Abnormal posture, stiff joints, swollen joints, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erectile or ejaculation problems
  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Breast enlargement in men, milk discharge, sexual problems, breast pain, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes or lips
  • Chills, fever
  • Abnormal gait
  • Thirst, malaise, chest discomfort
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Procedure-related pain
  • Infection
  • Abnormal secretion of hormone regulating urine volume
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep-related eating disorder
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high blood fats
  • Blunted emotions, inability to orgasm
  • Immobility and unresponsiveness (catatonia)
  • Brain blood vessel problems
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Head tremor
  • Glaucoma, eye movement disorders, eye rolling, eyelid margin inflammation
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells that fight infection
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Breathing difficulties during sleep (sleep apnea), rapid, shallow breathing
  • Pancreatitis, bowel obstruction
  • Swelling of tongue, cracked lips, drug rash
  • Scalp flaking
  • Muscle breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Delayed periods, breast enlargement, nipple discharge
  • Increased insulin in blood
  • Hardening of skin
  • Decreased body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Drug withdrawal symptoms
  • Jaundice (skin and eyes turn yellow)
  • Life-threatening complications of uncontrolled diabetes
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties
  • Cessation of bowel movements causing intestinal blockage
  • Severe rash with blisters and skin peeling (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Fast heartbeat when standing up (orthostatic tachycardia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart problems or take blood pressure medicine, as this medicine can lower blood pressure.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke (e.g., high blood pressure or heart disease).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience involuntary movements of the face or tongue.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).

  • If you are elderly and have dementia caused by a stroke, do not use this medicine.
  • If you are going to have eye surgery (cataract surgery), tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you notice swelling, pain, or redness in your legs, or chest pain and difficulty breathing, as these could be signs of a blood clot.
  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction with symptoms like fever, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, rash, or a drop in blood pressure, seek immediate medical attention.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or tiredness, so do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • If you have lactose intolerance, tell your doctor.
  • Some tablet strengths contain colorants (E110 or E102) that may cause allergic reactions.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine on your own; your symptoms may return. Your doctor should gradually reduce the dose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
