How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the correct dose for you, as it varies depending on your condition and age.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which for adults can be up to 6 mg, depending on your specific condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow or stiff movements, shaking, muscle stiffness, drooling, lack of facial expression)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
RARE
  • Uncontrolled movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, or problems speaking (signs of a stroke)
  • High fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Long-lasting or painful erection (priapism)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat and difficulty breathing
  • Blood clots in legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, trouble breathing)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, kidney or liver disease, or a history of blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had uncontrollable movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts, or if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia.
  • If you are an elderly patient with dementia caused by a stroke, you should not take this medicine.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine as it can increase side effects.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
