How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose. Usually, adults start with 2 ml once daily, and the dose may increase to 4-6 ml per day.

Method

Take orally with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6 ml (6 mg risperidone) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Tremors, slow movements, muscle stiffness
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Weight gain, increased appetite
  • Anxiety, restlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Respiratory infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea
  • Muscle or joint pain, back pain
RARE
  • Involuntary, jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts.
  • Sudden mental changes, weakness, numbness on one side of the body, or slurred speech (signs of stroke).
  • Confusion, unconsciousness, high fever, and severe muscle stiffness.
  • Prolonged and painful erection.
  • Blood clots (swelling, pain, redness in legs, chest pain, difficulty breathing).
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the throat and difficulty breathing.
  • Life-threatening complications from poorly controlled diabetes.
  • Uncontrolled muscle contractions, twitching, or shaking, and difficulty moving.
  • Blurred vision, eye infections, eye inflammation.
  • Fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, or feeling dizzy when standing up.
  • Rash, skin redness, hives, itching, dry skin, hair loss.
  • Difficulty controlling urination or frequent urination, painful urination.
  • Swelling of the body, arms, or legs.
  • Low number of white blood cells, making you more prone to infections.
  • New or worsening diabetes, high blood sugar, excessive thirst.
  • Elevated mood, confusion, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling skin, potentially spreading to the mouth, nose, eyes, or genitals.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure, or if you take blood pressure medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a high risk of stroke, such as high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in the brain.
  • If you experience uncontrolled, jerky movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts, tell your doctor right away.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice sudden changes in your mental state, weakness or numbness on one side of your face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech, as these could be signs of a stroke.

  • Your doctor will check for signs of high blood sugar or worsening diabetes.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have an increased risk of stroke; do not use risperidone if you have dementia caused by a stroke.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
