How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. A typical starting dose for adults is often 2 mg once daily, which may be adjusted.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth with water. The tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor, usually between 1 mg and 6 mg depending on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Symptoms like slow movements, stiff muscles, tremors (shaking), or feeling like movements stop and restart
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, common cold, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, or ear infection
  • High levels of a hormone called prolactin (can cause breast swelling in men, erection problems, decreased sex drive, breast discomfort, milk production, or menstrual issues in women)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Slow or lasting muscle contractions, often affecting the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia), which can be repetitive or twisting
  • Blurred vision, eye infection, or pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, or toothache
  • Rash or red skin
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, or joint pain
  • Trouble controlling urine (urinary incontinence)
  • Swelling of the body, arms, or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, or pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • Respiratory tract infection, bladder infection, eye infection, tonsillitis, fungal nail infection, skin infection, localized infection, viral infection, or skin inflammation caused by mites
  • Decreased white blood cells or platelets, anemia
  • Allergic reaction
  • New or worsened diabetes, high blood sugar, excessive water drinking
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite leading to malnutrition and underweight
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sexual desire, nervousness, nightmares
  • Uncontrolled jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts that may be permanent
  • Sudden reduction of blood flow to the brain (stroke or mini-stroke)
  • Unresponsive to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures or fainting
  • Balance problems, abnormal coordination, dizziness when standing up, difficulty concentrating, speech problems, loss or change of taste, reduced sensation to pain or touch, tingling or numbness of skin
  • Light sensitivity in eyes, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar
  • Lack of emotions, inability to have an orgasm
  • Immobility and unresponsiveness while awake (catatonia)
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), difficulty moving eyes, eye rolling, crusty eyelids
  • Dangerously low levels of white blood cells needed to fight infections
  • Dangerously excessive water drinking
  • Heart rhythm problems
  • Sleep apnea (breathing problems during sleep), fast shallow breathing
  • Inflammation of the pancreas or bowel obstruction
  • Swelling of the tongue, chapped lips, drug rash
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any of its ingredients.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you get blood clots, especially in your legs (swelling, pain, redness). These can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have sudden mental changes, or sudden weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs, especially on one side, or slurred speech. These could be signs of a stroke.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have a fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or feel confused or less aware (a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged, painful erection (priapism), get medical help right away.

  • Inform your doctor if you have uncontrolled movements of your tongue, mouth, or face; your doctor may decide to stop this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you have a severe allergic reaction, which can include fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure. Your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain and may lead to or worsen diabetes. Your doctor will check your weight and blood sugar regularly.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you have discussed this with your doctor.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your symptoms may return.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have an increased risk of stroke. Do not use this medicine if your dementia is caused by a stroke.
