How to Use

Dosage

For adults with schizophrenia, the usual starting dose is 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4 mg per day. Most patients feel better with a daily dose of 4–6 mg.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth with water. The tablets can be divided into equal doses.

Your doctor will determine your specific maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Feeling tired or having low energy
  • Movement problems such as slow or stiff movements, tremors, or a shuffling walk
  • Stomach problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain)
  • Weight gain or increased appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Flu-like symptoms (cold, cough, stuffy nose)
  • Blurred vision or eye infection
RARE
  • New or worsening diabetes, high blood sugar, or excessive thirst
  • Seizures or fainting spells
  • Changes in heart rhythm or very fast heartbeat
  • Problems with brain blood vessels, such as mini-strokes
  • Very high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, and confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Severe skin rashes with blisters and peeling (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Risperidon Sandoz if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to the lungs and cause chest pain or breathing difficulties.
  • If you have dementia, contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden changes in mental state, weakness or numbness on one side of your face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech. These could be signs of a stroke.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or a reduced level of consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure.

  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you have discussed it with your doctor.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Risperidon Sandoz.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
