How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 2 mg once daily. Your doctor will adjust the dose, and most people feel better on 4-6 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water. They can be taken with or without food. The tablet can be divided into two equal doses.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can be up to 6 mg per day depending on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep.
  • Headache, dizziness, or feeling tired.
  • Movement problems like slow movements, stiffness, or shaking.
  • Weight gain or changes in appetite (more or less hungry).
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Cold symptoms, sore throat, or cough.
  • Changes in hormone levels (prolactin), which can cause breast swelling or menstrual problems.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling (face, tongue) or breathing problems.
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulty).
  • Symptoms of a stroke, such as sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs, or speech problems.
  • High fever, muscle stiffness, heavy sweating, and confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • New or worsening diabetes, or very high blood sugar.
  • A prolonged and painful erection (priapism).
  • Uncontrolled jerky movements of the tongue, mouth, or face that you cannot stop.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • If you are elderly and have dementia, you have a higher risk of stroke. Your doctor will discuss this with you.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have had blood clots, as antipsychotics can increase the risk.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or tiredness. Do not drive or use machines, and avoid alcohol during treatment.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience high fever, muscle stiffness, heavy sweating, decreased consciousness, or severe allergic reactions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
