How to Use

Dosage

Usually 0.25 mg to 2 mg once or twice a day, as directed by your doctor. Your dose may vary depending on your condition.

Method

Swallow the tablets with a little water. You can take the medicine with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6 mg. Your doctor will determine the right maximum dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow or stiff movements, tremors, drooling, or a mask-like face)
  • Feeling sleepy or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (like pneumonia, chest infections, colds, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, flu-like symptoms)
  • Increased levels of the hormone prolactin (may cause breast swelling, erection problems, reduced sex drive, menstrual cycle changes, or milk leakage)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow or lasting muscle contractions, which can cause abnormal body positions or movements, often in the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (repeated, spastic, twisting, or jerking movements)
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Blurred vision, eye or conjunctival inflammation
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache
  • Skin rash, red skin
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Swelling of the body, arms, or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • Various infections (e.g., respiratory tract, bladder, eye, tonsil, nail fungus, skin, viral, tick-borne)
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., low white blood cells, low platelets, anemia, high eosinophils)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Diabetes (new or worsening), high blood sugar, excessive water drinking
  • Weight loss, poor appetite leading to malnutrition or low body weight
  • High cholesterol levels in blood
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled twitching or jerking movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts)
  • Sudden reduction of blood flow to the brain (stroke or mini-stroke)
  • Unresponsive to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Restless urge to move parts of the body, balance problems, coordination issues, dizziness when standing up, trouble concentrating, speech difficulties, loss or change of taste, reduced sensation to pain/touch, tingling or numbness in skin
  • Sensitivity to light, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation, conduction problems, prolonged QT interval, slow heart rate), palpitations
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure upon standing (causing dizziness or fainting), flushing
  • Pneumonia from inhaling food, lung congestion, airway congestion, harsh breathing sounds, wheezing, voice changes, breathing problems
  • Stomach or bowel inflammation, inability to control bowels, very hard stools, difficulty swallowing, excessive gas
  • Hives, itching, hair loss, thickened skin, eczema, dry skin, skin discoloration, acne, flaky/itchy scalp or skin, skin disorders, skin lesions
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase in blood (an enzyme indicating muscle breakdown)
  • Abnormal posture, stiff joints, swollen joints, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erection problems, ejaculation problems
  • Absent or irregular menstrual periods, other menstrual cycle disturbances (in women)
  • Breast development in men, milk discharge from breasts, sexual dysfunction, breast pain, breast discomfort, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changes in walking
  • Thirst, feeling unwell, chest discomfort, feeling irritated, general discomfort
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes in blood
  • Pain during medical procedures
RARE
  • Infection
  • Abnormal secretion of a hormone controlling urine volume
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high triglyceride levels in blood
  • Lack of emotions, inability to have an orgasm
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (confusion, reduced consciousness or unconsciousness, high fever, and severe muscle stiffness)
  • Brain blood vessel problems
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Head shaking
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), difficulty moving eyes, eye rolling, crusting on eyelid margins
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery (Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome)
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infection
  • Severe allergic reaction (fever, swelling of mouth, face, lips or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, sometimes low blood pressure)
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Blood clots in legs or lungs
  • Difficulty breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), fast/shallow breathing
  • Pancreas inflammation, bowel obstruction
  • Swollen tongue, chapped lips, drug-related skin rash
  • Dandruff
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Delayed menstruation, breast gland enlargement, breast enlargement, discharge from breasts
  • Increased insulin levels in blood
  • Priapism (prolonged erection that may require surgery)
  • Hardened skin
  • Lowered body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Withdrawal symptoms from stopping the medicine
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Life-threatening complications from poorly managed diabetes
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling possibly affecting the throat and causing breathing difficulties
  • Absence of bowel muscle movements, leading to bowel obstruction

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as this medicine can affect your heart and blood pressure.
  • If you are an older patient with dementia, you have a higher risk of stroke. Do not use this medicine if your dementia is caused by a stroke. Seek urgent medical help if you notice sudden changes in your mental state, weakness, or slurred speech.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had uncontrollable movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Get medical help right away if you develop fever, very stiff muscles, sweating, or a reduced level of consciousness.

  • If you have diabetes or are at risk, your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, as this medicine can affect them.
  • Men, seek urgent medical attention if you experience a prolonged or painful erection (priapism).
  • If you are scheduled for eye surgery for cataracts, tell your eye doctor that you are using this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems, which can affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
