How to Use

Dosage

The dose depends on your condition and age. Your doctor will tell you exactly how much to take. Adults usually start with 0.25 mg to 2 mg daily.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with water. You can take them with or without food. Tablets can be divided into equal halves.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes. For most conditions, the usual maximum daily dose for adults is 6 mg, but it may be less for certain conditions or if you have kidney or liver problems. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Slow movements, stiff muscles, shaking, or feeling like movements stop and start
  • Feeling sleepy or less alert
  • Headache
  • Chest infections, colds, sinus infections, ear infections, flu-like feelings
  • Weight gain
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Swelling in your body, arms, or legs
RARE
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs, which can cause swelling, pain, and redness, and may travel to the lungs causing chest pain and trouble breathing. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, or low blood pressure.
  • Life-threatening complications from uncontrolled diabetes
  • Prolonged or painful erection. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Seizures or fits
  • Irregular heartbeats or a very slow heart rate
  • High levels of the hormone prolactin, which can cause breast swelling or milk leakage in men, and menstrual problems or fertility issues in women.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as this medicine can lower blood pressure.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you have sudden changes in thinking, weakness, numbness, or slurred speech, as these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience uncontrolled movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia).
  • Be careful when driving or operating machines, as this medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems.

  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • If you have diabetes or are at risk, your doctor will check your blood sugar levels.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
