How to Use

Dosage

Dosage varies depending on the condition and age; always follow your doctor's instructions. For adults, typical starting doses range from 0.25 mg to 2 mg per day, taken once or twice daily.

Method

Take orally. Swallow tablets with water, with or without food. Tablets can be divided into equal doses.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is typically up to 6 mg, depending on the condition and doctor's advice. Treatment for aggression is usually limited to 6 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, muscle stiffness, tremors, shuffling walk, drooling, mask-like face)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Pneumonia, chest infection (bronchitis), common cold symptoms, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu-like symptoms
  • Increased prolactin levels (can cause breast swelling in men, erection difficulties, decreased sex drive; breast discomfort, milk discharge, menstrual problems in women)
  • Weight gain, increased appetite, decreased appetite
  • Sleep disturbances, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions, often affecting face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (repetitive, spasmodic, or twisting movements, or tics)
  • Tremor
  • Blurred vision, eye inflammation or conjunctivitis
  • Rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, nasal congestion
  • Abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache

  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain

RARE
  • Respiratory tract infection, bladder infection, eye infection, tonsillitis, nail fungus infection, skin infection, localized skin infection, viral infection, tick-borne skin infection
  • Decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets, anemia, decreased red blood cells, increased eosinophils
  • Allergic reaction
  • New onset or worsened diabetes, high blood sugar, excessive water drinking
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite, malnutrition and underweight
  • Increased blood cholesterol levels
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sexual desire, nervousness, nightmares
  • Unresponsiveness to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Balance disorders, coordination abnormalities, dizziness upon standing, difficulty concentrating, speech difficulties, loss or alteration of taste, reduced skin sensitivity to pain and touch, tingling or numbness of skin
  • Light sensitivity of eyes, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Sensation of spinning (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm disorders (atrial fibrillation, heart block, abnormal electrical conduction, prolonged QT interval, slow heart rate, abnormal ECG, fluttering or pounding in chest)
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure upon standing, flushing
  • Aspiration pneumonia, lung congestion, airway congestion, harsh breathing sounds, wheezing, voice disorders, respiratory tract disorders
  • Gastrointestinal inflammation, fecal incontinence, very hard stools, difficulty swallowing, excessive flatulence
  • Hives, itching, hair loss, skin thickening, eczema, dry skin, skin discoloration, acne, itching and flaking of skin/scalp, skin disorders, skin lesion
  • Increased blood creatine phosphokinase levels
  • Posture abnormalities, joint stiffness, joint swelling, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder
  • Cessation of menstruation, missed periods or other menstrual cycle disorders (in women)
  • Breast development in men, milk discharge from breasts, sexual dysfunction, breast pain, breast discomfort, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changes in gait
  • Thirst, feeling unwell, chest discomfort, irritability, feeling uncomfortable
  • Increased blood transaminase levels, increased blood GGT levels, increased blood liver enzyme levels
  • Procedure-related pain
RARE
  • Infection
  • Abnormal secretion of hormone regulating urine volume
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep-related eating disorder
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high blood triglyceride levels
  • Lack of emotions, inability to experience orgasm
  • Immobility or unresponsiveness while awake (catatonia)
  • Cerebrovascular disorders
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Head tremor
  • Glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure), eye movement difficulties, eye rolling, crusting of eyelid margins
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery (Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome, IFIS)
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infections
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Heart arrhythmias
  • Sleep-related breathing difficulties (sleep apnea); rapid, shallow breathing
  • Pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction
  • Tongue swelling, chapped lips, drug eruption
  • Dandruff
  • Breakdown of muscle fibers and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Delayed menstruation, breast gland enlargement, breast enlargement, discharge from breasts
  • Increased blood insulin levels
  • Hardening of skin
  • Lowered body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping the medication
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as this medication can lower blood pressure.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in the brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had involuntary movements of the tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).

  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it.

  • Men, seek immediate medical attention if you experience a prolonged or painful erection (priapism).
  • Inform your doctor if you have problems with body temperature regulation or overheating.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you or a family member has a history of blood clots, as antipsychotic medicines can cause blood clots.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will monitor your weight regularly.
  • This medicine can increase prolactin levels, which may affect fertility and cause menstrual issues or breast swelling; report any such symptoms to your doctor.
  • If you are scheduled for eye surgery (cataract), inform your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have an increased risk of stroke. Do not use if your dementia is caused by a stroke. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice sudden changes in mental state, one-sided weakness, numbness, or slurred speech.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment with this medicine.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning pregnancy, or suspect you might be pregnant.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems, affecting your ability to drive or operate machinery. Be cautious until you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine contains lactose; if you have a sugar intolerance, discuss it with your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
