How to Use

Dosage

Typically 2-6 mg per day, divided into one or two doses daily as prescribed by your doctor.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is typically 6 mg for adults, but the dosage may vary depending on the condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping, feeling drowsy
  • Slow movements, stiff muscles, shaking (tremors)
  • Headache
  • Feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Weight gain
  • Swelling in your body, arms, or legs
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin (can affect periods and sexual function)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue, trouble breathing, rash, or fever
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, trouble breathing)
  • Seizures or fainting spells
  • New or worsening diabetes, or high blood sugar
  • Blurred vision, eyes sensitive to light, or dry eyes
  • Heart rhythm problems (fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat)
  • Severe skin reactions, such as a painful rash with blisters and peeling skin (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • High fever, very stiff muscles, sweating a lot, or feeling confused (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medication, as your dose may need adjustment.
  • If you experience involuntary, jerky movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts, tell your doctor immediately as your medication might need to be stopped.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness (a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • If you or a family member has a history of blood clots, or if you develop symptoms like swelling, pain, or redness in your leg, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical help.

  • Elderly dementia patients have an increased risk of stroke; do not use this medicine if you have dementia caused by a stroke, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden changes in mental state, one-sided weakness, numbness, or slurred speech.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, fatigue, and vision problems, which may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
