How to Use

Dosage

Typical adult starting doses range from 0.25 mg twice daily to 2 mg once or twice daily, depending on the condition. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take tablets by mouth with water, with or without food. Tablets can be divided.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can vary depending on your condition. For many adult conditions, it is typically between 1 mg and 6 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Parkinson-like symptoms, such as slow or stiff movements, trembling, or drooling
  • Feeling tired or less awake
  • Headache
  • Infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, cold symptoms, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu-like illness
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause breast swelling in men, sexual problems, or missed periods in women
  • Weight gain, changes in appetite (increased or decreased)
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow, lasting involuntary muscle contractions, often in the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (twisting or jerking)
  • Tremor
  • Blurred vision, eye inflammation or conjunctivitis
  • Fast heart rate, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache
  • Rash, red skin
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence)
  • Swelling in body, arms or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, general pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • Various infections including respiratory, bladder, eye, skin, and fungal infections
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., lower white blood cells or red blood cells, anemia)
  • Allergic reaction
  • New or worsened diabetes, high blood sugar, drinking too much water
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite, malnutrition
  • Increased cholesterol in blood
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sexual desire, nervousness, nightmares
  • Unresponsiveness to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Restless legs, balance or coordination problems, dizziness when standing up, difficulty concentrating, speech problems, changes in taste, reduced skin sensitivity, tingling or numbness
  • Light sensitivity in eyes, dry eyes, increased tears, red eyes
  • Dizziness (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm changes (e.g., irregular heartbeat, slow heart rate), abnormal ECG, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure, blushing
  • Aspiration pneumonia, lung congestion, breathing difficulties, wheezing, voice changes
  • Stomach or bowel inflammation, fecal incontinence, very hard stools, difficulty swallowing, excessive gas
  • Hives, itching, hair loss, thickened skin, eczema, dry skin, skin discoloration, acne, flaky scalp, skin disorders
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase (an enzyme related to muscle breakdown) in the blood
  • Abnormal posture, stiff or swollen joints, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems
  • Missed or irregular periods, or other menstrual cycle disorders in women
  • Breast development in men, milk discharge, sexual dysfunction, breast pain or discomfort, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of the face, mouth, eyes, or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changes in walking style
  • Thirst, feeling unwell, chest discomfort, irritability, general discomfort
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Pain related to medical procedures
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep-related eating disorder
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high fat levels in blood (triglycerides)
  • Lack of emotions, inability to have an orgasm
  • Immobility or unresponsiveness while awake (catatonia)
  • Brain blood vessel problems
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Head tremor
  • Glaucoma (high eye pressure), eye movement problems, eye rolling, crusting on eyelids
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infections
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Sleep breathing problems (sleep apnea); fast, shallow breathing
  • Pancreatitis, bowel obstruction
  • Swollen tongue, chapped lips, drug-related rash
  • Dandruff
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Delayed periods, breast enlargement, discharge from breasts
  • Increased insulin levels in blood
  • Hardening of the skin
  • Low body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medicine
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Life-threatening complications from poorly controlled diabetes
  • Severe allergic reaction with throat swelling and breathing difficulties
  • Lack of bowel muscle movement, leading to bowel obstruction
  • Severe or life-threatening rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, low blood pressure, or are taking blood pressure medication, as this medicine can lower blood pressure.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in the brain.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have an increased risk of stroke; do not use this medicine if your dementia is caused by a stroke.

  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will monitor your weight.
  • This medicine can cause new diabetes or worsen existing diabetes; your doctor will check for high blood sugar.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor before using this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
