How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your specific dose based on your condition and age. For adults with schizophrenia, a typical starting dose is 2 mg per day, which may be increased to 4-6 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take this medicine with or without food. Tablets can be divided.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow movement, stiff muscles, shaking, slow shuffling walk)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections: pneumonia, chest infection (bronchitis), common cold, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu-like symptoms
  • High levels of a hormone called prolactin (can cause breast swelling, erection problems, or missed periods)
  • Weight gain, increased appetite, decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems (other than difficulty sleeping), irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow, lasting, involuntary muscle contractions, often affecting face, eyes, mouth, tongue, jaw)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary movements (repetitive, cramp-like, or twisting motions)
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Blurred vision, eye infection or pink eye
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, uncomfortable feeling in stomach, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache
  • Rash, skin redness
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Swelling in the body, arms, or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • Respiratory tract infection, bladder infection, eye infection, tonsillitis, nail fungus infection, skin infection, localized skin infection, viral infection, tick-borne skin inflammation
  • Decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets, anemia, decreased red blood cells, increased eosinophils
  • Allergic reaction
  • New or worse diabetes, high blood sugar, excessive water intake
  • Weight loss, lack of appetite and malnutrition, underweight
  • High cholesterol levels in blood
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Unresponsive to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Balance problems, coordination problems, dizziness when standing up, difficulty concentrating, loss or change of taste, reduced sensation to pain/touch, tingling or numbness of skin
  • Sensitivity to light, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Irregular heartbeat, slow heart rate, abnormal ECG, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, flushing
  • Pneumonia from inhaling food, lung congestion, airway congestion, coarse breathing, wheezing, voice disorders, respiratory disorders
  • Stomach or intestinal inflammation, fecal incontinence, very hard stools, difficulty swallowing, excessive gas
  • Hives, itching, hair loss, skin thickening, eczema, dry skin, skin discoloration, acne, itching/flaky scalp or skin, skin disorders, skin lesion
  • Increased blood creatine phosphokinase levels
  • Abnormal posture, joint stiffness, joint swelling, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems
  • End of menstruation, missed periods or other menstrual cycle disorders (in women)
  • Breast development in men, milk discharge from breasts, sexual dysfunction, breast pain, breast discomfort, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changes in walking style
  • Feeling thirsty, feeling ill, chest discomfort, feeling irritated, general discomfort
  • Increased blood transaminase levels, increased GGT levels, increased liver enzyme levels
  • Pain related to procedures
  • Abnormal secretion of a hormone controlling urine volume
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep-related eating disorder
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high blood triglyceride levels
  • Lack of emotion, inability to have an orgasm
  • Immobility or unresponsiveness while awake (catatonia)
  • Cerebrovascular disorders
  • Coma due to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Head shaking
  • Glaucoma, eye movement difficulties, eye rolling, crusting of eyelid margins
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery (IFIS)
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells (needed to fight infection)
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Sleep-related breathing difficulties (sleep apnea); rapid, shallow breathing
  • Pancreatitis, bowel obstruction
  • Swollen tongue, chapped lips, drug rash
  • Dandruff
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Delayed menstruation, breast gland enlargement, breast enlargement, discharge from breasts
  • Increased blood insulin levels
  • Skin hardening
  • Low body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medicine
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Life-threatening complications related to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling possibly in the throat and causing breathing difficulties
  • Lack of muscle movement in the intestines, leading to bowel obstruction.
  • Severe rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any of its ingredients.
  • If you have dementia, especially from a stroke, you have a higher risk of stroke or death with this medicine. Seek immediate medical help if you have sudden changes in mental state, weakness, or slurred speech.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get jerky or stiff movements in your face, tongue, or other body parts, or if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, and confusion. These can be serious.
  • Be aware of blood clots. If you have swelling, pain, or redness in your leg, or chest pain and trouble breathing, get medical help right away.
  • If you are a man and get a long-lasting, painful erection, seek medical help immediately.

  • This medicine can cause weight gain and new or worse diabetes. Your doctor will check your weight and blood sugar regularly.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine may make you feel dizzy, tired, or have vision problems. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how it affects you.
  • If you are having cataract surgery, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your symptoms may return.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
