How to Use

Dosage

For adults with schizophrenia, the usual starting dose is 2 mg per day, which can be increased to 4 mg on the second day, with most patients feeling better on 4-6 mg daily.

Method

You can take this medicine with or without food. Do not drink alcohol. You can swallow the solution as is, or mix it with a small amount of mineral water, orange juice, or black coffee and drink immediately.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, but typically it is between 1 mg and 6 mg per day for most conditions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow, stiff movements, shaking, drooling)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
RARE
  • Pneumonia, chest infection, cold symptoms, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu-like feeling
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow or lasting involuntary muscle contractions, often in the face, eyes, mouth, tongue)
  • Dyskinesia (uncontrolled muscle movements, twitching)
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Blurred vision, eye infection or pink eye
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain, discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, toothache
  • Allergic reaction
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Low blood pressure when standing up (can cause weakness or dizziness), flushing
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the throat and breathing difficulties

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as this medicine can lower blood pressure and your dose may need adjustment.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke, like high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in your brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had involuntary movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a condition with symptoms like fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or reduced awareness (called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Inform your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had low white blood cell counts in the past.
  • Your doctor will check for high blood sugar if you have or develop diabetes, as this medicine can affect blood sugar levels.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • This medicine can increase prolactin levels, which may affect fertility or cause breast swelling; your doctor may check your hormone levels.
  • If you plan to have eye surgery (cataract), tell your eye doctor you are taking this medicine, as it can affect your pupils during the operation.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as antipsychotic medicines can increase the risk of clots.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
