How to Use

Dosage

For adults with schizophrenia, the usual starting dose is 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4-6 mg daily, taken once or twice a day. Your doctor will determine the best dose for you.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Some tablets (1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, 4 mg) can be divided if needed, but the 0.5 mg tablet cannot be divided.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, which is usually up to 6 mg for adults with schizophrenia, but can vary by condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Symptoms like slow movement, stiff muscles, or shaking (parkinsonism)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Weight gain
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause breast swelling or milk production in men and women, and menstrual problems in women
  • Dizziness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
RARE
  • Sudden changes in mental state, or sudden weakness/numbness in the face, arms, or legs (especially on one side), or slurred speech, even if short-lived. These can be signs of a stroke.
  • Uncontrolled, jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia).
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing problems. Seek medical help immediately.
  • High fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or reduced awareness (signs of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • A long-lasting and painful erection (priapism).
  • Severe allergic reaction with symptoms like fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, itching, rash, or low blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • If you are an elderly patient with dementia caused by a stroke, you should not use this medicine, as it may increase the risk of another stroke.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems, so do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you and after talking to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney or liver problems, or a history of blood clots.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • If you need eye surgery for cataracts, tell your eye doctor that you are taking Risperidon Orion.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
