How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults with schizophrenia is 2 mg per day, which your doctor may increase.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food. Tablets of 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, and 4 mg can be divided, but 0.5 mg tablets cannot.

Important

The maximum daily dose for most adults is usually 6 mg. Your doctor will tell you the best dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Shaking, stiff muscles, or slow movements (like Parkinson's symptoms)
RARE
  • Sudden change in mental state, weakness or numbness on one side of the face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech (signs of stroke).
  • Uncontrolled, jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia).
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) which can travel to the lungs causing chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • High fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or confusion (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, rash, or low blood pressure.
  • Prolonged or painful erection (priapism).
  • Very severe skin rash with blistering and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine, as your dose may need adjustment.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have a higher risk of stroke. Do not use this medicine if you have dementia caused by a stroke.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain and may lead to new or worsening diabetes. Your doctor will monitor your weight and blood sugar.
  • Avoid alcohol. This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems, so do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
