How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. The dose usually starts small and is slowly increased.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can divide 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, and 4 mg tablets, but not the 0.5 mg tablet.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. For adults, it is usually up to 6 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Movement problems like slow movement, stiff muscles, or shaking (parkinsonism)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Weight gain
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision or eye problems like infection
  • Fast heartbeat or high blood pressure
  • Stomach pain, throwing up, feeling sick, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Rash or red skin
  • Muscle spasms, bone, back, or joint pain
RARE
  • Allergic reaction
  • Developing diabetes or existing diabetes getting worse, high blood sugar
  • Weight loss, not eating enough, or being underweight
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness). If these move to the lungs, it can cause chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery, such as pupils not getting wide enough or the iris becoming floppy.
  • Very serious skin rash with blisters and skin peeling that can be life-threatening (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • A painful erection that lasts a long time (priapism) in men.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in it.
  • If you are an older adult with dementia, get medical help right away if you suddenly feel confused, weak on one side of your face, arms, or legs, or have trouble speaking. These could be signs of a stroke.
  • Contact a doctor right away if you get a high fever, stiff muscles, sweat a lot, or become confused or pass out.
  • If you notice signs of a blood clot, like swelling, pain, or redness in your legs, talk to a doctor right away.
  • Get medical help right away if you have a serious allergic reaction, with symptoms like fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, or very low blood pressure.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
