How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. The usual starting dose for adults is typically 2 mg per day, or 0.5 mg twice a day for older adults and certain conditions.

Method

Swallow tablets with water. 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, and 4 mg tablets can be divided into equal doses. 0.5 mg tablets cannot be divided.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which is typically between 1 mg and 6 mg per day, depending on your condition and how you respond.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, stiff muscles, shaking)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (like pneumonia, bronchitis, cold symptoms, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu-like symptoms)
  • High prolactin levels (can cause breast swelling in men, erection problems, reduced sex drive; in women, breast discomfort, milk discharge, missed periods, or fertility issues)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep disturbances, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow or long-lasting involuntary muscle spasms, often in the face like eye, mouth, tongue, or jaw movements)
  • Dizziness
  • Dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements, which can be repetitive, spastic, twisting, or jerking)
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Blurred vision, eye infection or conjunctivitis
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, toothache
  • Rash, skin redness
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
  • Swelling of body, arms or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, pain
  • Falls
RARE
  • More infections (like bladder infection, tonsillitis, fungal nail infection, skin infection, viral infection, skin inflammation caused by mites)
  • Changes in blood cells (reduced white blood cells, reduced platelets, anemia, increased eosinophils)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite leading to malnutrition and being underweight
  • Increased cholesterol in blood
  • Elevated mood (mania), confusion, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Unresponsive to stimuli, loss of consciousness, low level of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Need to move certain body parts, balance problems, coordination problems, dizziness when standing up, trouble concentrating, speech difficulties, loss or change of taste, reduced sensation to pain/touch, tingling or numbness in skin
  • Light sensitivity of eyes, dry eyes, increased tear production, red eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm changes (like atrial fibrillation, heart conduction problems, slow heartbeat, abnormal ECG, fluttering or pounding in chest)
  • Low blood pressure (especially when standing up), flushing
  • Breathing problems (like pneumonia from inhaling food, lung or airway congestion, harsh breathing, wheezing, voice changes)
  • Stomach or gut inflammation, fecal incontinence, very hard stools, difficulty swallowing, excessive gas
  • Skin issues (like hives, itching, hair loss, thickened skin, eczema, dry skin, skin discoloration, acne, itchy scalp or dandruff, skin disorders, skin lesions)
  • Increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in blood (an enzyme released during muscle breakdown)
  • Abnormal posture, joint stiffness, joint swelling, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, inability to urinate, painful urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems
  • Menstrual cycle problems (like absence or missed periods) or breast issues in women (like milk discharge, breast pain, breast discomfort, vaginal discharge)
  • Breast development in men
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changes in walking
  • Feeling thirsty, feeling unwell, chest discomfort, irritability, general discomfort
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood
  • Pain related to a procedure
RARE
  • Abnormal secretion of hormone that controls urine volume
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep-related eating disorder
  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high triglycerides in blood (a type of fat)
  • Lack of emotions, inability to have orgasm
  • Immobility and unresponsiveness while awake (catatonia)
  • Head shaking
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), difficulty moving eyes, eye rolling, crusting of eyelid margins
  • Breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea), fast, shallow breathing
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas), bowel obstruction
  • Swelling of tongue, cracked lips, drug rash
  • Dandruff
  • Muscle breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Increased insulin level in blood
  • Hardening of skin
  • Lower body temperature, cold arms and legs
  • Withdrawal symptoms when stopping medicine
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any of its ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, uneven heartbeat, low blood pressure, or if you take blood pressure medicine, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a high risk of stroke, like having high blood pressure or issues with brain blood vessels.
  • Inform your doctor if you've ever had uncontrolled movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts, or conditions with fever, stiff muscles, and confusion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or if you notice significant weight gain, as this medicine can affect blood sugar and weight. Your doctor will monitor these.

  • Inform your doctor if you or your family has a history of blood clots, as antipsychotic medicines can sometimes increase this risk.
  • If you are scheduled for eye surgery (like for cataracts), tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
