How to Use

Dosage

Typical dosage varies depending on the condition and patient; generally, adults start with 0.25 mg to 2 mg per day, with maintenance doses usually between 1 mg and 6 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet(s) whole with water. Some tablet strengths (1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg) can be divided, but the 0.5mg tablet cannot.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually up to 6 mg, but always follow your doctor's specific instructions, as doses vary by condition and patient.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep.
  • Parkinsonism: slow movements, muscle stiffness, shaking, and sometimes a mask-like face.
  • Feeling tired or less alert.
  • Headache.
  • Pneumonia, chest infection, cold symptoms, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, ear infection, or flu-like feelings.
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause breast swelling or erection problems in men, and breast discomfort or missed periods in women.
  • Weight gain, increased appetite, or decreased appetite.
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, or restlessness.
  • Dystonia: slow or prolonged involuntary muscle contractions, often affecting the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw.
  • Dizziness.
  • Involuntary muscle movements, which can be repetitive, spastic, twisting, or jerking.
  • Tremor (shaking).
  • Blurred vision, eye infection, or conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • Fast heart rate, high blood pressure, or shortness of breath.
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, or stuffy nose.
  • Stomach pain, stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth, or toothache.
  • Rash or skin redness.
  • Muscle spasms, bone or muscle pain, back pain, or joint pain.
  • Urinary incontinence (difficulty controlling urination).
  • Swelling of the body, arms, or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, fatigue, pain, or falls.
RARE
  • Sudden weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the face, arms, or legs, or sudden trouble speaking; these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Uncontrolled, jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts.
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs, which can cause swelling, pain, or redness, and may travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing problems.
  • Fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or a lowered level of consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • As a man, having a prolonged or painful erection (priapism).
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • If you have dementia caused by a stroke, do not use this medicine. If you have dementia and experience sudden changes in your mental state, or sudden weakness/numbness on one side of your face, arms, or legs, seek medical help right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, involuntary movements, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, or kidney/liver problems, or if you have a history of blood clots or low white blood cells.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you and have talked to your doctor.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine. Newborns of mothers who used this medicine late in pregnancy may show symptoms like shaking or breathing problems.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your symptoms may return.
  • Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
  • If you are going to have eye surgery for cataracts, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
