How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults start with 2 mg once a day, and your doctor may slowly increase it to 4–6 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually up to 6 mg, taken once or twice a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, stiff muscles, shaking)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (such as pneumonia, common cold, ear or urinary tract infections)
  • Increased prolactin hormone levels (may cause breast swelling or menstrual changes)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions, often in the face, tongue, mouth)
  • Dizziness
  • Dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements, twitching, twisting)
  • Tremors (shaking)
  • Blurred vision, eye infection
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth
  • Rash, red skin
  • Muscle spasms, muscle or bone pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Body swelling, fever, chest pain, weakness, falls
RARE
  • Increased various infections (e.g., bladder, skin, eye infections)
  • Blood cell changes (such as low white blood cells, platelets, or anemia)
  • Allergic reaction
  • New or worsened diabetes, high blood sugar, increased thirst
  • Weight loss, poor nutrition
  • Mania, confusion, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Unresponsiveness, loss of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Balance or coordination problems, speech difficulties, changes in sensation
  • Light sensitivity of eyes, dry eyes, increased tears
  • Vertigo, ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Irregular heartbeats, fast heart rate
  • Low blood pressure, fainting when standing up
  • Aspiration pneumonia, breathing difficulties, voice changes
  • Digestive tract inflammation, fecal incontinence, difficulty swallowing
  • Hives, itching, hair loss, dry skin or other skin changes
  • Increased creatine phosphokinase in blood (an enzyme related to muscle damage)
  • Abnormal posture, joint stiffness or swelling, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent urination, difficulty or pain when urinating
  • Erectile or ejaculation problems
  • Missed periods or other menstrual cycle problems
  • Breast development in men, breast discharge, sexual dysfunction, breast pain, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, or lips
  • Chills, increased body temperature
  • Changed walking style
  • Thirst, feeling unwell, chest discomfort, irritability
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Pain related to a procedure
  • Abnormal secretion of a hormone that controls urine volume
  • Sleepwalking

  • Sugar in urine, low blood sugar, high triglycerides in blood
  • Lack of emotion, inability to have an orgasm
  • Catatonia (immobility and unresponsiveness while awake)
  • Brain blood vessel disorders

  • Glaucoma, eye movement disorders, eye rolling
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery
  • Dangerously low levels of certain white blood cells
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • Sleep apnea, rapid shallow breathing

  • Swollen tongue, chapped lips, drug rash
  • Dandruff
  • Rhabdomyolysis (muscle cell breakdown and muscle pain)
  • Delayed periods, enlarged breasts, or breast discharge
  • Increased insulin levels in blood
  • Thickened skin
  • Low body temperature, cold hands and feet
  • Withdrawal symptoms from stopping the medicine
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Life-threatening complications of uncontrolled diabetes
  • Severe allergic reaction with throat swelling and breathing difficulties
  • Bowel paralysis and obstruction
  • Severe skin syndrome (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke or are at risk of having one.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had uncontrolled movements of your face, tongue, or mouth.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had symptoms like fever, stiff muscles, sweating, and confusion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia.

  • This medicine can cause weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes. Your doctor will monitor your weight and blood sugar.
  • This medicine can increase levels of a hormone called prolactin, which might cause menstrual problems or breast swelling.
  • If you are having cataract eye surgery, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if your dementia is caused by a stroke.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or tiredness. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
