How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 2 mg per day, which can be increased. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on your condition and age.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 6 mg in a day unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Parkinson-like symptoms (slow movements, muscle stiffness, shaking)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (like chest, sinus, ear, or urinary tract infections), flu-like symptoms
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin (can cause breast swelling in men, or breast discomfort/menstrual issues in women)
  • Weight gain, changes in appetite (more or less hungry)
  • Sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness
  • Dystonia (slow or prolonged involuntary muscle contractions, often affecting face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary movements (repeated, spastic, or jerky movements)
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Blurred vision, eye infection, red eyes
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, toothache
  • Rash, skin redness
  • Muscle spasms, muscle or bone pain, back pain, joint pain
  • Difficulty controlling urine
  • Swelling of body parts (like arms or legs), fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, pain, falls
RARE
  • Sudden changes in mental state, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech (may be signs of a stroke)
  • Uncontrollable jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to the lungs (causing chest pain and trouble breathing)
  • Fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or reduced consciousness (signs of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Long-lasting or painful erection (priapism)
  • Severe allergic reaction (with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, or low blood pressure)
  • Low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infections
  • New or worsening diabetes, high blood sugar, drinking too much water
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Abnormal release of a hormone that controls urine amount
  • Sleepwalking, eating disorders while asleep
  • Eye problems like glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), difficulty moving eyes, eye rolling, crusting on eyelids, and issues during cataract surgery
  • Severe or life-threatening rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any of its ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or if you take blood pressure medicines, as this medicine can affect your blood pressure.
  • If you have a higher risk of stroke (like having high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in your brain), tell your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have ever had uncontrollable movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia. If you are an elderly patient with dementia, do not use this medicine if your dementia was caused by a stroke.

  • If you have diabetes, tell your doctor. They will check your blood sugar regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has a history of blood clots, as antipsychotic medicines can increase the risk of clots.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain. Your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • This medicine may make you feel dizzy or sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you and your doctor says it's safe.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
