How to Use

Dosage

The dose varies greatly depending on your condition and age. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. Adults usually start with 2 mg daily for schizophrenia or mania. For aggression, the starting dose is usually 0.25 mg twice daily. Elderly patients typically start with 0.5 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose depends on your specific condition and should always be determined by your doctor. For schizophrenia, many patients feel better on 4-6 mg daily. For mania, typical daily doses range from 1 to 6 mg. For aggression in dementia, the maximum is often 2 mg daily. For children with conduct disorders, the maximum daily dose varies by weight, typically 0.75 mg to 1.5 mg daily.

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, stiff muscles, tremors)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (chest, urinary tract, ear), flu-like symptoms, sinusitis
  • High prolactin hormone levels (can cause breast swelling in men, erection problems, missed periods in women)
  • Weight gain, changes in appetite
  • Mood changes (irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness), sleep disturbances
  • Dystonia (slow or lasting involuntary muscle movements, often in face, eyes, mouth)
  • Dizziness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (repetitive, twitching)
  • Tremor
  • Blurred vision, eye inflammation
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, cough, nosebleed, stuffy nose

  • Changes in blood cells (low white blood cells, low platelets, anemia, high eosinophils)
  • Allergic reaction
  • New or worsened diabetes, high blood sugar, drinking too much water
  • Weight loss, decreased appetite, malnutrition
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Mood changes (mania, confusion, nervousness, nightmares), decreased sex drive
  • Unresponsiveness, loss of consciousness
  • Seizures, fainting
  • Restless legs, balance issues, dizziness when standing, speech problems, altered sensation
  • Eye problems (light sensitivity, dry eyes, increased tears, red eyes)
  • Vertigo, ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm problems (fast or slow heart rate, irregular beats)
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting when standing up
  • Breathing problems (lung/airway congestion, wheezing, voice changes)
  • Stomach or bowel infection, difficulty swallowing, severe constipation, gas
  • Skin issues (hives, itching, hair loss, dry skin, acne, eczema, flaky scalp)
  • High levels of a muscle enzyme in blood
  • Posture changes, stiff joints, swollen joints, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Frequent or painful urination, inability to urinate
  • Erection problems, ejaculation problems
  • Missed periods or other menstrual problems
  • Breast issues (male breast development, milk leakage, pain), sexual dysfunction, vaginal discharge
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, or lips

  • Severe allergic reaction with throat swelling and breathing problems
  • Paralyzed bowel causing obstruction
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Fast heart rate when standing up

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke or blood clots. Do not use this medicine if your dementia is caused by a stroke.
  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or unusual body movements (like in your face or tongue).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or feel very confused, or if you are a man and have a prolonged, painful erection.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain and may affect your blood sugar. Your doctor will monitor these.

  • Do not drink alcohol. Be careful when driving or using machines as this medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems.
  • If you are scheduled for cataract eye surgery, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
