How to Use

Dosage

For adults with schizophrenia, the usual starting dose is 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4 mg on the second day. Your doctor will advise on the best dosage for you.

Method

Take the tablets orally with water.

Important

The usual daily dose for most adults with schizophrenia is 4-6 mg, divided into one or two doses, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Slow movements, stiff muscles, or shaking (parkinsonism)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Weight gain
  • Increased levels of the hormone prolactin (may cause breast swelling or sexual issues)
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
RARE
  • Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs, or trouble speaking (may be signs of a stroke)
  • High fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion (signs of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Blood clots in the veins, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the leg), which can travel to the lungs and cause chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Prolonged or painful erection
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or blood vessel problems in the brain.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion.
  • Inform your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease, dementia, diabetes, or epilepsy.
  • If you are male and have experienced a prolonged or painful erection, contact your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
