How to Use

Dosage

For adults with schizophrenia, you usually start with 2 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase this to 4 mg the next day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water.

Important

Most adults with schizophrenia feel best on a daily dose between 4-6 mg, but the maximum daily dose can be up to 6 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Headache
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, muscle stiffness, shaking)
  • Weight gain
  • Increased level of a hormone called prolactin (can cause breast swelling or menstrual problems)
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Blurred vision
  • Flu-like symptoms or common infections
RARE
  • Stroke-like symptoms (sudden weakness, numbness or speech problems in the face, arms, or legs)
  • Blood clots in legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulties)
  • High fever, severe muscle stiffness, sweating, and confusion (a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Prolonged or painful erection (priapism)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and difficulty breathing
  • Complications during cataract surgery where the eye's pupil does not widen enough, potentially leading to eye damage

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have dementia caused by a stroke.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, an irregular heartbeat, or low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have uncontrolled twitching or jerking movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.
  • Seek urgent medical help if you get a high fever, severe muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion, as these could be signs of a serious condition.

  • Inform your doctor if you or anyone in your family has a history of blood clots, as antipsychotic medicines may increase this risk.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
