How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults with schizophrenia or mania is 2 mg per day. Your dose may be adjusted by your doctor. For elderly patients, or those with kidney or liver disease, the starting dose is usually half of the normal dose.

Method

Take the orodispersible tablet immediately from the package and place it on your tongue; the tablet dissolves in your mouth within seconds and can be swallowed with or without water, or dissolved in water and drunk immediately. Do not push the tablet through the blister foil.

Important

For most patients with schizophrenia, an effective dose is 4-6 mg per day, and for mania, 1-6 mg per day. Your doctor will decide the safe maximum dose for you.

  • flu-like symptoms, runny nose, ear or urinary tract infections
  • weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • irritability, depression, anxiety
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision, eye infection
  • fast heartbeat, high blood pressure
  • stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
  • rash, skin redness
  • muscle or joint pain, back pain
  • swelling in the body, fever, weakness
  • stroke symptoms (sudden weakness in face, arms, or legs, speech problems)
  • blood clot (swelling, pain, and redness in legs)
  • severe allergic reaction (fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulties)
  • tardive dyskinesia (involuntary, jerky movements of the face or tongue)
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, muscle stiffness, decreased consciousness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of blood clots.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have an increased risk of stroke; do not use if your dementia is caused by a stroke.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems; avoid driving or operating machinery until you have spoken with your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor.

  • Contains aspartame, which can be harmful to people with phenylketonuria.
  • Monitor your weight regularly, as this medicine may cause weight gain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have experienced involuntary movements (twitching of the tongue, mouth, or face) or if you have fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
