Risperidon Krka is a medicine used to treat conditions like schizophrenia, mania, and short-term aggression in people with Alzheimer's dementia or in children and adolescents with behavioral problems.

How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults start with 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4-6 mg per day. Elderly patients usually start with 0.5 mg twice daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Place the tablet on your tongue where it will dissolve quickly, then swallow with or without water. You can also dissolve it in a glass of water and drink immediately. Do not push the tablet through the foil packaging.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, but it typically does not exceed 6 mg per day for most conditions. For Alzheimer's-related aggression, the maximum is usually 2 mg per day, for a maximum of 6 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep)
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, stiff muscles, shaking, slow shuffling walk, blank face)
  • Feeling tired or less alert
  • Headache
  • Infections (chest, sinus, ear, urinary tract, flu-like symptoms)
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite
  • Mood changes (irritability, depression, anxiety, restlessness)
  • Dystonia (slow, lasting muscle spasms in face, eyes, mouth, tongue, jaw, or other body parts)
  • Dizziness or involuntary muscle movements
  • Blurred vision or eye infections
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, toothache
  • Skin rash, redness, muscle or joint pain, back pain
  • Leaking urine (urinary incontinence)
  • Swelling of the body, arms, or legs, fever, chest pain, weakness, tiredness, pain, falls
RARE
  • Serious allergic reaction (swelling of face, mouth, tongue, throat, difficulty breathing, rash, itching, low blood pressure)
  • Blood clots in veins (especially in legs, causing swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulty)
  • High fever, stiff muscles, sweating, and confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Prolonged or painful erection (priapism)
  • Stroke symptoms (sudden mental change, weakness/numbness on one side of face/arms/legs, slurred speech)
  • Tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled twitching movements of face, tongue, or other body parts)
  • Very low white blood cell count (needed to fight infections)
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery (Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome)
  • Pancreatitis, intestinal blockage, jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
  • Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis) with blisters and peeling skin

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke.
  • Be careful if you have diabetes, epilepsy, kidney or liver problems, or a history of blood clots.
  • If you have dementia caused by a stroke, you should not use this medicine.
  • This medicine contains aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine and can be harmful to people with phenylketonuria (PKU).

  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
