How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 2 mg per day, which can be increased to 4 mg on the second day. Most patients feel better with a daily dose of 4-6 mg.

Method

Place the tablet on your tongue immediately after taking it out of the blister. It will dissolve in seconds and can be swallowed with or without water. Ensure your mouth is empty before placing the tablet. You can also dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and drink it right away. Do not push the tablet through the foil.

Important

The maximum daily dose for most adults is typically 6 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping, feeling tired, headache, slow movements, muscle stiffness, shaking, flu-like symptoms (e.g., colds, infections), changes in hormones (which can cause breast changes or period problems), weight gain or loss, feeling irritable or anxious, dizziness, involuntary muscle movements, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, breathing problems, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, skin rash, muscle and joint pain, back pain, loss of bladder control, swelling, fever, chest pain, general weakness, falls.
RARE
  • Serious infections (e.g., bladder, eye, skin), changes in blood cells, severe allergic reaction, new or worse diabetes, high blood sugar, too much water drinking, weight loss, high cholesterol, confusion, nervousness, nightmares, seizures, fainting, problems with balance or coordination, speech or taste changes, skin sensitivity problems, light sensitivity, dry or red eyes, ear pain, ringing in ears, abnormal heart rhythms, low blood pressure when standing up, lung issues (e.g., pneumonia from inhaling food), severe stomach/bowel problems (e.g., blockage), severe skin conditions (e.g., hives, eczema, hair loss, severe blistering rash like Stevens-Johnson syndrome), muscle breakdown, kidney or liver problems, sexual dysfunction (erectile/ejaculation problems), menstrual cycle changes, breast enlargement in men, low body temperature, cold hands/feet, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), severe complications from diabetes, paralysis of intestines.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you notice a sudden change in your mental state, or sudden weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs (especially on one side), or slurred speech, as these may be signs of a stroke (especially in elderly dementia patients).
  • Tell your doctor right away if you experience involuntary, jerky movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia).
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you get blood clots in your veins, especially in your legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness), which can travel to your lungs and cause chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness (a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).

  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged or painful erection, seek medical attention right away.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, or a drop in blood pressure, get immediate medical help.
