How to Use

Dosage

You will typically receive an injection of 25 mg every two weeks, but your doctor may adjust this to 37.5 mg or 50 mg based on your needs.

Method

A healthcare professional will give you this medicine as an intramuscular injection into your upper arm or buttocks every two weeks, alternating the injection site. It must not be given into a vein.

Important

The maximum single dose given by injection is 50 mg every two weeks.

  • Low levels of certain white blood cells (granulocytes)
  • Abnormal secretion of hormone regulating urine volume

  • Sleepwalking, sleep-related eating disorder
  • Catatonia (immobility and unresponsiveness)
  • Lack of emotions, low consciousness
  • Head tremors
  • Eye movement problems, eye rolling, light sensitivity
  • Eye problems during cataract surgery (IFIS)
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Dangerously low white blood cells (agranulocytosis), increased eosinophils
  • Sleep apnea, pneumonia from inhaling food, harsh breathing, voice/respiratory disorders
  • Pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, very hard stools
  • Drug rash, hives, skin thickening, dandruff, skin lesions
  • Rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown and pain)
  • Abnormal posture
  • Breast enlargement, discharge
  • Discomfort, low body temperature, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)
  • Dangerously excessive water intake
  • High insulin levels, brain blood vessel problems, unresponsiveness
  • Coma from uncontrolled diabetes, sudden vision loss/blindness
  • Glaucoma (high eye pressure), eyelid crusting, flushed face, swollen tongue, chapped lips
  • Gynaecomastia, coldness in arms/legs, withdrawal symptoms
  • Life-threatening diabetes complications
  • Severe allergic reaction with throat swelling and breathing difficulties
  • Bowel obstruction due to absent muscle movements

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have never taken Risperdal before, you must start with oral Risperdal before switching to injections.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, or take blood pressure medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have risk factors for stroke (e.g., high blood pressure, circulatory problems).
  • Report any uncontrolled movements of your face, tongue, or other body parts to your doctor.

  • Tell your doctor if you've had fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Inform your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease or dementia.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of low white blood cell counts.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or epilepsy.
  • Men, report to your doctor if you experience a prolonged or painful erection.
  • Inform your doctor if you have problems regulating your body temperature.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Inform your doctor if you have high prolactin levels or a prolactin-dependent tumor.
  • Let your doctor know if you or your family has a history of blood clots.
  • Seek emergency medical care for rash, throat swelling, itching, or breathing problems, as these may be severe allergic reactions.
  • Your doctor will monitor your weight regularly as this medicine can cause weight gain.
  • Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar, as this medicine can cause or worsen diabetes.
  • If you are having cataract surgery, tell your eye doctor you are using Risperdal Consta.
  • This medicine should not be used in elderly patients with dementia.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for sudden changes in mental state, or sudden weakness/numbness on one side of face/limbs, or slurred speech, as these may be signs of a stroke.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a family, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, fatigue, and vision problems; do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
