How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 2 mg per day for schizophrenia and mania, or 0.25 mg twice daily for aggression in dementia. For children, the starting dose is 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg once daily, depending on weight. Doses are adjusted by your doctor.

Method

Take Risperdal oral solution by mouth. Use the measuring syringe provided in the package to measure the exact dose.

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can vary depending on your condition and how you respond to the treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, muscle stiffness, tremors)
  • Tiredness or reduced alertness
  • Headache
  • Weight gain, increased appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash, skin redness
  • Muscle, bone, or joint pain
  • Swelling in the body, arms, or legs
RARE
  • Blood clots (especially in legs, causing swelling, pain, redness; can travel to lungs causing chest pain, breathing difficulties)
  • Sudden change in mental state, sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech (possible signs of a stroke)
  • Uncontrolled jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia)
  • High fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Prolonged or painful erection (priapism)
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, or drop in blood pressure

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Risperdal if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of low white blood cells, stroke, or Parkinson's disease.
  • Be aware that this medicine can increase the risk of blood clots, especially in the legs, which can lead to serious lung problems. Seek medical help immediately if you notice symptoms like swelling, pain, or redness in your leg, chest pain, or trouble breathing.
  • Risperdal can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a family, discuss this with your doctor before taking Risperdal.
