Rismyl is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia, mania, and short-term aggression in people with Alzheimer's disease or behavioral problems in children and adolescents.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, a typical starting dose is 0.5 mg to 2 mg per day, adjusted by your doctor.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water, with or without food. Tablets can be divided into two equal halves.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6 mg, but your doctor will decide the best limit for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Parkinson-like symptoms such as shaking, stiffness, and slow movement.
  • Headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, and feeling tired.
  • Feeling restless, anxious, depressed, or dizzy.
  • Stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach pain, and dry mouth.
  • Weight gain, fever, and changes in appetite (increased or decreased).
  • Flu-like symptoms, blurred vision, eye infections, blocked nose, and cough.
  • Urinary tract infection and problems controlling urine.
  • Muscle spasms, joint and muscle pain, back pain, and swelling in arms or legs.
  • Skin rash, red skin, and ear infections.
  • Fast heartbeat, chest pain, high blood pressure, and falls.
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood (which can affect fertility).
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as a bad rash, swelling of the face or throat, and trouble breathing.
  • Blood clots, which can cause swelling and pain in the leg, or chest pain and trouble breathing if they travel to the lungs.
  • Very high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, and confusion (a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • A long, painful erection (priapism).
  • Stroke symptoms, such as sudden weakness on one side of the body, vision problems, or slurred speech.
  • Abnormal or very slow heart rhythms.
  • Seizures.
  • Uncontrolled movements of the tongue, mouth, or face.
  • New or worsening diabetes, with symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, and tiredness.
  • Serious infections due to low white blood cells, or lung infection from inhaling food.
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis), high pressure in the eyes (glaucoma), low blood salt levels, or severe muscle pain.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, weight loss, or difficulty breathing (signs of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is very rare).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Rismyl if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Rismyl.
  • Rismyl can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you and have talked to your doctor.
  • If Rismyl is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, the newborn might show symptoms like shaking or muscle stiffness. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby.
  • Elderly patients with dementia have a higher risk of stroke. Do not use Rismyl if your dementia is caused by a stroke. Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden changes like weakness on one side, vision problems, or slurred speech.

  • If you have kidney or liver problems, your starting dose and following doses will be halved and increased more slowly.
  • Rismyl should not be used in children under 18 for schizophrenia or mania, and not in children under 5 for behavioral problems.
