How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose. For adults, it often starts at 0.5 mg to 2 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. Tablets can be split in half.

Important

The maximum daily dose depends on your condition and your doctor's instructions, but often ranges from 0.5 mg to 6 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Parkinsonism (shaking, stiffness, slow movement, drooling)
  • Headache, difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, tiredness
  • Restlessness, anxiety, depression, dizziness
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, indigestion, stomach pain, sore throat, dry mouth, toothache
  • Weight gain, fever, changes in appetite
  • Shortness of breath, flu, blurred vision, eye infection, blocked nose, nosebleed, cough
  • Urinary tract infection, bedwetting, trouble controlling urine
  • Tremors, muscle cramps, involuntary movements, joint and muscle pain, back pain, swelling of hands/feet
  • Rash, red skin, ear infection
  • Fast heartbeat, chest pain, high blood pressure, falls
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling of face/lips/throat, trouble breathing, dizziness, shock)
  • Blood clots (swelling/pain/redness in legs, chest pain, breathing trouble)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, confusion)
  • Long-lasting painful erection
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma), causing vision problems
  • Low sodium in blood (weakness, confusion, muscle aches)
  • Severe muscle weakness or pain from muscle breakdown
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, breathing problems, slow heart rate, tiredness)
  • Stroke-like symptoms (sudden mental change, one-sided weakness, vision problems, slurred speech)
  • Abnormal heart rhythm (fluttering, very slow/abnormal heartbeats)
  • Not responding, low consciousness, unconsciousness, seizures
  • Involuntary rhythmic movements of tongue/mouth/face
  • Developing or worsening diabetes with severe symptoms (thirst, frequent urination, hunger, tiredness)
  • Increased infections due to low white blood cells
  • Lung infection from inhaling food/liquid
  • Skin infection (cellulitis)
  • Inability to urinate or severe constipation

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Rismyl if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, a history of irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, or risk factors for stroke or blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or dementia.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, or have ever had a low white blood cell count.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Rismyl, and do not drive or use machines until you discuss potential side effects like dizziness or vision problems with your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a family, ask your doctor for advice.
  • If you are having eye surgery, tell your doctor or hospital staff that you are taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. For treatment of psychosis only. Use only in special cases and for a limited time in the management of severe behavioural symptoms of cognitive impairment. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk for falls and extrapyramidal symptoms.
