How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years old, take 1 to 2 tablets once or twice daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not suck, chew, or keep it in your mouth. For best absorption, take between meals. If it upsets your stomach, you can take it with food or reduce the dose.

Important

Do not exceed 2 tablets per day unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Upper stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dark or black stools (this is harmless)
  • Irritation, sores, bleeding, or narrowing in the digestive tract, especially if the tablet gets stuck.
RARE
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Dark discoloration of the stomach or intestinal lining
  • Mouth ulcers (if the tablet is not swallowed whole)
  • Ulcers in the throat, esophagus, or airways (if the tablet enters the breathing tube)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Retafer if you have too much iron in your body (e.g., hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis).
  • Do not take if you are getting regular blood transfusions for conditions other than iron deficiency.
  • Do not take if you have a condition where red blood cells break down too quickly (chronic hemolysis).
  • Do not take if you have a disease that affects how your body uses iron (e.g., sideroblastic anemia, lead poisoning anemia, thalassemia).
  • Do not take if you have narrowing in your throat or any part of your intestines.

  • Do not take if you are allergic to iron(II) sulfate or any other ingredients in Retafer.
  • If you have trouble swallowing, tell your doctor. Do not suck, chew, or hold the tablet in your mouth as this can cause mouth sores, tooth staining, or damage to your throat or airways. Always swallow whole with water.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Retafer if you have a stomach or intestinal disease (like inflammatory bowel disease, stomach inflammation, or ulcers).
  • Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children. An overdose of iron can be very dangerous and even deadly for small children.
  • Do not use other iron supplements at the same time as Retafer.
