How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose. For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is 5-20 mg once a day. For heart failure, it's usually 2.5 mg once a day.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you. You can take it with or without food, usually with a glass of water. If you have trouble swallowing, you can break the tablet at the score line.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, weakness or feeling unwell
  • Blurred vision
  • Cough
  • Dizziness due to low blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, fast heartbeat, angina or chest pain
  • Headache, depression, fainting (syncope), changes in taste
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Rash, allergic reactions like swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat which may cause breathing or swallowing difficulties
  • High potassium and creatinine levels in the blood (seen in blood tests)
RARE
  • Redness
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Heart attack (possibly due to very low blood pressure in some high-risk patients)
  • Stroke (possibly due to low blood pressure in some high-risk patients)
  • Anemia (including aplastic and hemolytic anemia)
  • Confusion, insomnia or drowsiness, nervousness
  • Tingling or numbness in the skin
  • Dizziness (vertigo)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Runny nose, sore throat or hoarseness
  • Chest tightness related to asthma
  • Slow digestion (ileus), pancreatitis
  • Nausea (vomiting), indigestion, constipation, loss of appetite
  • Irritated stomach (gastric irritation), dry mouth, stomach ulcer
  • Muscle cramps
  • Worsened kidney function, kidney failure
  • Increased sweating
  • Itching or hives
  • Hair loss
  • General feeling of being unwell, fever
  • Impotence
  • High protein levels in urine (measured by a test)
  • Low blood sugar or low sodium levels, high urea levels in blood (all measured by blood tests)
  • Raynaud's phenomenon, where hands and feet become very cold and white due to poor blood flow
  • Changes in blood counts, such as low white and red blood cells, low hemoglobin, low platelets
  • Bone marrow depression
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpit, and groin
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Strange dreams or sleep problems
  • Fluid or other substances accumulating in the lungs (seen on X-ray)
  • Nasal inflammation
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing difficulties (pneumonia)
  • Inflammation of the cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, throat
  • Reduced urine output
  • Target-shaped skin rash (erythema multiforme)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe skin conditions with redness and peeling, blisters or sores), exfoliative dermatitis/erythroderma (severe rash with peeling or flaking skin), pemphigus (small fluid-filled blisters on the skin)
  • Liver or gallbladder problems, such as reduced liver function, liver inflammation, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), high liver enzyme or bilirubin levels (measured by blood test)
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
RARE
  • Swelling of the intestinal wall (intestinal angioedema)
RARE
  • Too much antidiuretic hormone, causing fluid buildup, weakness, tiredness, or confusion
  • A group of symptoms including some or all of the following: fever, blood vessel inflammation (serositis/vasculitis), muscle pain (myalgia/myositis), joint pain (arthralgia/arthritis). Rash, sensitivity to light, or other skin reactions may occur.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Renitec if you are allergic to enalapril or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (angioedema) in the past, causing swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, making it hard to swallow or breathe, whether the cause was known or not, or if it was hereditary.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant. Avoid use during early pregnancy as well.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have recently taken sacubitril/valsartan for chronic heart failure, as this increases the risk of angioedema (rapid swelling under the skin, e.g., in the neck area).
