How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. The usual starting dose is 5-20 mg once daily for high blood pressure and 2.5 mg once daily for heart failure.

Method

Take the tablet as directed by your doctor, with water. You can take it with or without food. You can break the tablet in half if you have trouble swallowing it whole.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg, taken once or in two divided doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, weakness, or feeling unwell
  • Blurred vision
  • Cough
  • Lightheadedness due to low blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, fast heartbeat, chest pain
  • Headache, depression, fainting, changes in taste
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Tiredness
  • Skin rash, allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, causing difficulty breathing or swallowing)
  • High potassium and creatinine levels in blood (seen in blood tests)
RARE
  • Redness or sudden drop in blood pressure
  • Heart attack or stroke (possibly due to very low blood pressure)
  • Anemia (low red blood cells) or confusion, insomnia, drowsiness, nervousness
  • Tingling or numbness of the skin or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness or asthma-related chest tightness
  • Slow digestion, pancreatitis, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, loss of appetite
  • Irritated stomach, dry mouth, stomach ulcer or muscle cramps
  • Worsening kidney function, kidney failure or increased sweating
  • Itching, hives, hair loss or a general feeling of being unwell, fever
  • Impotence or high protein in urine (measured by test)
  • Low blood sugar or sodium, high urea in blood (all measured by blood tests)
  • Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers and toes become cold and white due to poor blood flow)
  • Changes in blood counts (low white/red blood cells, low hemoglobin, low platelets) or bone marrow depression
  • Swollen lymph nodes (neck, armpit, groin) or autoimmune diseases
  • Strange dreams, sleep problems or fluid accumulation in lungs (seen on X-ray)
  • Nasal inflammation, lung inflammation causing breathing difficulties or inflammation of cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, throat
  • Reduced urine output or target-like skin rash (erythema multiforme)
  • Severe skin conditions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis, pemphigus)
  • Liver or gallbladder problems (e.g., reduced liver function, hepatitis, jaundice, high liver enzymes/bilirubin)
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia) or swelling in the intestine (intestinal angioedema)
  • Too much antidiuretic hormone (causes fluid retention, weakness, tiredness, confusion)
  • Fever, blood vessel inflammation, muscle pain, joint pain, rash, light sensitivity

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to enalapril or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (angioedema), such as swelling of your face or throat that makes it hard to breathe.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine that contains aliskiren.

  • Do not use if you are taking or have recently taken a combination of sacubitril and valsartan for heart failure, as the risk of swelling is increased.
