How to Use

Dosage

You will start with a small dose, usually 8 mg once daily. Your doctor may slowly increase your dose over several weeks until it is right for you.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water or other liquid in the morning, preferably with food. Do not chew or crush it. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

Important

Do not take more than one capsule per day. The maximum daily dose is 24 mg.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Depression
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Muscle tremors or spasms
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness, weakness, or general feeling of illness
  • Severe drowsiness and lack of energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Falls
  • Wounds
  • Heart problems (e.g., slow or irregular heartbeat, palpitations, abnormal EKG)
RARE
  • Allergic reaction
  • Dehydration
  • Tingling or numbness in the skin
  • Changes in taste
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty controlling body or limb movements (extrapyramidal disorder)
  • Blurred vision
  • Persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Flushing
  • Gagging or retching
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Severe skin rashes with blisters and peeling (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, target-like lesions)
  • Seizures
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Reminyl if you are allergic to galantamine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Reminyl if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Reminyl is only for treating Alzheimer's disease symptoms, not other memory problems or confusion.
  • Stop taking Reminyl and get medical help right away if you notice serious skin rashes, heart problems like a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had surgery on your stomach, bowel, or bladder.

  • Reminyl can cause weight loss; your doctor will check your weight regularly.
  • Reminyl is not recommended for children and adolescents.
  • If you are going to have surgery with anesthesia, tell your doctor you are taking Reminyl beforehand.
  • Reminyl can make you feel dizzy or sleepy, especially when you first start taking it or when the dose changes. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel this way.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have a sugar intolerance, talk to them before taking this medicine.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking Reminyl. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or planning a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Consider adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
