How to Use

Dosage

Start with 8 mg once a day. Your doctor will slowly increase the dose if needed.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water in the morning, preferably with food. Do not chew or crush it.

Important

The most you can take is 24 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick or throwing up.
  • Not feeling hungry, losing weight.
  • Seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there.
  • Feeling very sad or down.
  • Feeling dizzy or passing out.
  • Shaking or sudden muscle movements.
  • Head pain.
  • Feeling very tired, weak, or generally unwell.
  • Feeling very sleepy and lacking energy.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Pain or discomfort in your stomach.
  • Loose, watery stools.
  • Upset stomach.
  • Falling down.
  • Minor injuries.
RARE
  • An allergic reaction.
  • Not having enough water in your body.
  • Prickling or numb feeling on the skin.
  • Different taste in your mouth.
  • Feeling sleepy during the day.
  • Problems controlling movements of your body or limbs.
  • Blurry eyesight.
  • Constant ringing in your ears.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Redness of the face or neck.
  • Gagging or dry heaving.
  • Sweating a lot.
  • Weak muscles.
  • Higher levels of liver enzymes in your blood (seen in blood tests).
  • Inflammation of the liver.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to galantamine or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • This medicine can cause serious skin rashes, heart issues (like slow heartbeat), or seizures. If these happen, stop taking it and get medical help right away.
  • Reminyl is only for Alzheimer's disease. It is not for other kinds of memory loss or confusion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had heart problems, stomach ulcers, blockages in your gut, epilepsy or other movement problems, breathing issues, or trouble urinating.

  • Tell your doctor if you've had surgery on your stomach, intestines, or bladder recently.
  • This medicine can cause weight loss. Your doctor will check your weight often.
  • If you need surgery with anesthesia, tell your doctor you are taking Reminyl beforehand.
  • Reminyl can make you feel dizzy or sleepy, especially at first. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Consider adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
