How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the right dose for you, as it varies for each person.

Method

It is given as a single injection into a vein or as a continuous drip (infusion) into a vein over a longer period.

Your doctor or nurse will make sure you receive the correct amount and will adjust it if needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slow heart rate
  • Shallow breathing (breathing difficulties)
  • Temporary stop in breathing
  • Itching
  • Shivering after surgery
  • High blood pressure after surgery
  • Cough
RARE
  • Constipation
  • Pain after surgery
  • Lack of oxygen in the body
  • Severe allergic reaction (can cause swelling, trouble breathing, or heart problems)
  • Very slow heart rate, possibly leading to the heart stopping
  • Feeling very sleepy during recovery
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Heart rhythm problems (irregular heartbeat)
  • Your body getting used to the medicine (tolerance) or becoming dependent on it
  • Withdrawal symptoms if the medicine is stopped too quickly, such as fast heart rate, high blood pressure, restlessness, feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, chills, trembling, and sweating.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to remifentanil, other ingredients, or fentanyl-like medicines (e.g., alfentanil, sufentanil).
  • Do not use as an injection into your spinal canal.
  • Not for use as the only medicine to start anesthesia.
  • Tell your doctor if you have breathing or liver problems, as you might be more sensitive to breathing difficulties.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member have a history of alcohol, prescription drug, or illegal drug abuse or addiction.

  • Tell your doctor if you smoke or have a history of mood problems (depression, anxiety) or other mental illness.
  • This medicine can lead to tolerance and dependence with repeated use, which increases the risk of overdose. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about becoming dependent.
  • Do not drink alcohol until you have fully recovered from the effects of this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning a baby, tell your doctor. This medicine can affect your baby's breathing if given during or near childbirth. Stop breastfeeding for 24 hours after taking this medicine.
  • After receiving this medicine, do not drive or use machines until your doctor says it's safe.
