How to Use

Dosage

The dose is carefully decided by a healthcare professional based on your pain level and the type of surgery or treatment you are receiving.

Method

This medicine is given into a vein (intravenously), either as a single injection or as a continuous slow drip (infusion).

Important

Your doctor or nurse will carefully control the dose you receive, as there is no fixed maximum daily dose.

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slow heart rate
  • Shallow breathing
  • Temporary stop in breathing (apnea)
  • Itching
  • Cough
  • Shivering or chills (after operation)
  • High blood pressure (after operation)
RARE
  • Constipation
  • Lack of oxygen in the body
  • Cardiac arrest (heart stops)
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Drug dependence (needing the medicine) or tolerance (needing more for the same effect)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (fast heart rate, high blood pressure, restlessness, feeling sick, throwing up, diarrhea, anxiety, chills, shaking, sweating)
  • Pain (after operation)
  • Drowsiness or feeling overly calm (after operation)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to remifentanil or other similar pain medicines called opioids (like fentanyl).
  • This medicine should not be injected into your spinal canal.
  • It should not be the only medicine used to start anesthesia for surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung or liver problems, as you might have more trouble breathing with this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 65, weak, or have low blood pressure, as you might have more heart problems or issues with blood pressure.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, as this medicine can cause dependence.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially those for blood pressure, heart, depression, anxiety, or sleep, as taking Remifentanil with these can be dangerous.
  • If used for a long time, this medicine can cause dependence, and stopping it suddenly can lead to withdrawal symptoms like fast heart rate, high blood pressure, and restlessness.
